GTA IV's a terrible port from console... don't expect good performance. just turn down the settings till it runs fine at 25fps, and be happy

I ran it 26-60 fps with it dropping below that minimum at times on my old P7450 with the settings all the way down. I am getting alot better performance with the T9600 overclocked to 3.2 Ghz getting basically the same performance at medium everything.
Make sure you have the 1.0.3.0 patch installed it makes a huge (but not really...) difference. The CPU usage drags the GPU down as found in a 13 processor bench of the game GPU almost doesnt matter.
Due to the physics calculations and all the ai for everything around you a quad core really is needed. At the same time it could be optimized better for PC but remember were dealing with a game that had a Triple Core or a Cell with 7 Vector processors to handle all this. While the PS3 version doesnt really utilize anymore power then the 360 version remember the PS3's vector units are alot more powerful then your cpu.
I am not defending the quality of the port, but in reference to what it was originally written for a dual core x86 processor is not comparable. I hope they continue to optimize the performance. -
I don't think GTA4 supports crossfire either, so that doesn't help. I use high textures and very high shadows/reflections/water etc, turn view distance and detail distance to 25, and traffic to 50 for 1680 x 1050, vsync on. For you I'd try the same but with textures on medium and go from there.

i haven't overclocked yet and i haven't up date i dont think just installed and played
btw the cousin is annoying
michelle FTW
@ another geek ...... i am running 1440 on medium except shadows -
Yeah you definitely want ptch 1.03...

Well I figured all patches would install the same way. Why would u be able to directly install one in the game but not the other.

heh, I've never even played the game before or even seen it, so I was basically just making a huge assumption didn't know if it was right or wrong but thanks for clearing it up.

GTA4 requires an online release date check, an online activation though it appears if you go in the folder there is an offline activater. It has a very annoying social network app that can use 25% of your cpu while doing nothing and asks u to login in a million times on the way to launching the game. It also requires live to be installed and you have to create an offline live profile within the game if you wish to save your game while offline.....
The game is definitely not future proof a few years from now unless they keep everything up or release an installer patch the game might not be playable. -

You need 2 things for this game to run well a fast quad core, (try to shoot for 2.8ghz) and lots of ram & video ram (video ram being the most important)
My desktop with dual 4850's and a q6600 @ 3.6ghz cant max out this game due to not having enough video ram.....
Runs fine though just wont let me max out the settings. I did the manual overide for settings and turned on High shder instead of low and raised view distance up to about 3/4ths and besides a very rare texture issues it works fine.
I have not tried this on the W90 yet, in 2 more weeks I can give it a shot i hope. -
Hi Clutch,
I have the same processor as yourself(T9600) and am one of these guys who is never satisfied with my lot....what do you think of this processor and should I upgrade to the core2extreme asap?
Any suggestions or advice regarding this processor would be nice...
sorry to interrupt the thread Mr Moo,,,,I wont hang around long I promise! -

If your looking for performance in GTA4 i would say forget about it, a QX9300 is the only way your even going to be close to happy with GTA4.
I just upgraded from the P7450 and the T9600 was a definite upgrade and In most cases i no longer need an overclock for anything. GTA4 is the rare exception to that. -
Thanks Clutch, I see what you are saying.

No PS3 here and I like my PC version, I got it open box for $15 so it was cheap
It does make my computer run hard though, as my room gets very hot very fast when playing GTA4. Most games are not that bad as long as I have vsync on.
GTA 4 on m17 FPS
