So, as I've asked about before, I know that the GPU downclocks when on battery power. I was wondering if any m15x owners would mind posting any screenshots/benchmarks for me (and everyone else who's looking to purchase the m15x). Here's what I was interested in:

-Screenshots of graphs showing the GPU clock speed when the computer's plugged in and when it's on battery

-Any gameplay tests you can provide showing how a particular game performs when the computer is plugged in vs. when it's on battery power (I'm mainly interested in demanding games like Crysis, but any games will do, as it will still provide the information I'm looking for).

-Possibly battery life when playing demanding games (I'm interested in how much more life the smartbay adds)

-Any personal comments as to how this thing performs on-the-go (how hot does it get when using it on your lap, how comfortable it is to use, how well it performs in general when gaming on-the-go)

If anyone can provide any of these, it would be greatly appreciated (and +rep to all who participate of course )

Once I get some information and screenshots, I'll post them in the first post here, to make an easy-to-get-to chart of how well the m15x performs when running on battery.

Thanks, I have read it before, though those temps were taken before the latest BIOS.

oic. TBH though, i dont see how any average joe m15x owner will have the ability to take temp readings from different areas of lappy like chaz did.

as far as i know, the smartbay can add up to 2-2.5 hrs in silent mode. while playing games, i would expect you to get an added half an hour with the gpu on at its downlclcked setting because of being unplugged.

so maybe 2 hrs-2.4 hrs playing games..... thats still the best for a 15.4 inch.

Why would you be playing gpu intensive games like crysis when not plugged in?

Hehe, I probably wouldn't, but I'd just like to see what to expect if I ever did (it's sort of an experiment).

As far as temps go, I didn't mean exact temps. I just wanted general user experience, like "It get's very hot", or "Eh, the heat isn't so bad", nothing terribly specific.

Typically, you can expect to see a linear change in performance with clockspeeds. That is, if you downclock by 50%, you'll see a 50% decrease in performance.

Now, I can't say how this will affect graphics card performance since there are three seperate clocks on the m15x: Core, Shader and Memory.

My hunches tell me that the shader clocks are tied to the core clocks in some inextricable way, but I'm not sure how. I'll add this to my ToDo list for my review. Woo! My baby is sitting in the FedEx depot in town! :D

if you have a m15x just open up rivatuner and look at the graph while your m15x is plugged. after that press the stealth mode button and thats the clocks you get while the m15x is on battery power.

Ya, I'll probably do all of this once I get my m15x, but I don't have it yet.

    Plug out info:

    Core clock 297 ROP domain
    Core clock 594 shader domain
    Memory clock: 300
    Core temp: 63C

Wow, that's a MASSIVE decrease in performance. Why don't they warn about this somewhere on the website? Seriously, I would have never known this if I hadn't dug around in these forums.

they should assume you know. this happens with all laptops. its not a surprising fact that the video card will downclock on battery power. battery technology is not keeping up with performance technology. until we are able to get better batteries, dont expect the performance of dedicated video cards to be at 100% on battery.

Does this only happen with high-powered GPU's like the 8800, or do lower power ones (like the 8600) do this as well?

lol! i would hardly call an 8600 a lower power piece. i know it doesnt compare to an 8800 but maybe if you took something from the 7series you would get a better idea.

ALL GPUs will downclock. This has became like... common sense.
So I guess on this one, we can't really bash AW for.

I would agree that it would be nice if you could choose to override it (and consequently kill the battery in 10 minutes...) but we shouldn't get mad at AW for following an industry standard.

Yah I know, I'm not really mad. It's just something I never knew about laptops :p (and to think, I thought I knew everything!)
