Dude. the bag is what causes it. I carried my laptop around in a laptop suitcase if you want to call it that. The paint on the alienhead of the M5550 wore down to where there was no paint anymore because of it.

What I'm saying is that the sleeve will help enormously.

I figured this thread needed a bump (maybe an update too) as there is really good info here.

Yea, i was pretty mad bc as soon as i openned the box i called to aks if the bag was too abrasive adn the yof course said no. so after 4 DAYS the back corners are now worn. but now, three months later, in and out of that bag they still are hte only worn parts of my laptop, nothing else seems ot be wearing now. iwish they would replace the chassis bc that is plain nonsense for a $2500+ laptop.

If you see something that says 'moved', then that means the thread either a) was moved to another forum, or b) was merged with another thread. In this case I merged a smaller thread with this one. I do my best to reduce clutter on the forums.

Is there any certainty yet as to whether the m9750 can be fitted with 8800 gtx cards in sli or not? I know this has been discussed numerous times but it's been a while since anyone touched the subject so i was wondering if there's an update. :)

Maybe someone who got a new M15x who also has an M9750 would care to pop the 8800gtx into the M9750 and see if it works?

I've been trying to get Packer to do some tests but he seems kinda reluctant :p . Which i can totally understand of course, if my new system would be working i wouldn't be popping things out of it to try them on an older system either. Nevertheless i'm still hoping someone takes the leap and starts testing! Even if for some mysterious reason we wouldn't be able to use them in sli i'd still be more then happy to put just one 8800M GTX in my m9750, imagine how cool it would run with all that open space in a 17" ;)

I've just gotten of the phone after a 40 minute talk with aw tech support and have some news. The tech guy was very helpful and gave me the impression that he knew what he was talking about, he couldn't give any definite answers but i managed to squeeze some information out of him which might be accurate(it also might totally not be).

    - the m17x will be released in 2 weeks

    - it will ofc have 8800m gtx in sli but they're working on getting a 9-series card in there asap (the plan is that the maxed out configuration has 9-series cards)

    - it's very likely that the m9750 will be upgradeable with 8800 cards

-aw is aware that the 8700's 128 memory bus is causing discontent along their customers so he emphasized again that it's highly likely that an upgrade will be possible in the near future(he couldn't be more specific or definite because of a confidentiality agreement)

So there you have it, like i stated before don't take this post for gospel as we all know that if i would call again and talk to a different techie i might get a totally different answer. I just wanted to share this with you guys because it did naturally get my hopes up. I've never heard the term "confidentiality agreement" as many times over 40 minutes as i did on that phone call :p

Sorry to go off-topic a bit, but can someone measure the m9750? What I'm looking for is length from the left of the touchpad to the far left edge of the unit, length from the right of the touchpad to the far right edge of the unit, and length from the front of the unit to the bottom edge of the keyboard.

I'm looking into getting InvisibleShield for the m15x, but they only have an application for the m9700 (which uses the same chassis as the 9750 IIRC). I'm hoping that the measurements will be longer than the m15x so I can cut what I don't need and apply the wrist section to the m15x.

    Thanks in advance!

    shima

from left side of touchpad to left side of unit = 4 5/8"
from right side of touchpad to right side of unit = 7 3/8"

I just took those measurements of my 9750 as I typed...

    Hey, quick question...

When I purchased my Alienware m9750, It came with a single nVidia GeForce 8700 GT512mb GPU.

However, I would love to upgrade to SLI so to be running DUAL 512mb cards.

How much would it be to buy just 1 card? Is the price you provided mean your upgrading TOO 2 cards? or is that to purchase 2 8700's?

And would I have to send it back to upgrade add the second video card?

    Thanks

you have a point, yes, but I figured I'd ask in case anyone here already knew the answer to it. I would only call alienware if I was about to purchase it. Which I'm not upgrading right now. I still have some other finances to take care of first.

with the prospect of support for the m8800 coming for the 9750 it might be prudent for you to wait awhile...the m8800 in single configuration is superior to the 8700 in SLI...by a decent measure.
But to answer your question I suspect you will drop somewhere in the range of $300-$400 for an additional 8700 gpu - I'm not positive, but I think you can get it sent to you to install yourself...worst-case scenario would have you sending it to them to install the additional card.

does anyone know where i can download the raid drivers? i am looking to upgrade the harddrives myself when i recieve the laptop but it does not appear the raid drivers are on alieanware's site.

also, will the laptop arrive with a driver cd that contains all the drivers it came pre-installed with or will i need to locate some of them manually?

nvm, i found them for win xp

hey! i bought my second 8700gt by phone(200 euros)! I asked them if i could send them my 9750 BUT THEY DIDNT ACCEPT!
If you want to upgrade with SLI you have to dit YOURSELF
Of course a technician can help you sending you pics or you even can call them if needed! They ll lead you by phone!
But dont worry its not difficult as ii looks to be.....

At this time no, and it would be very risky to expect the m9750 to get the 8800.

unless they offer a plain mxm III version of the 8800 GTX it will not work in the 9750...realistically I don't see it happening.

    For Gaming ? Dual 7950GTX : it's better than dual 8700.
And you can use every OS you want but i don't undestand why do you want a 64bit OS...

well as the 64bit uses 4GB ram wouldnt it be a bit faster then 32bit?
is the performance difference that much?

The m9750 cannot use more than 3.5 GB of RAM, including the video RAM, making the limit closer to 2.5. This is a chipset limitation that cannot be repaired.

what so if the limit of the Laptop is 3.5GB and the limit of 32bit OS how can that mean that only 2.5GB can be used, what happens to the spare 1GB ram

If your using SLI you'll get 2.5gb, in single mode you get 3gb. The OS reserves 512mb for each card. This is a limitation on the chipset only having a 4gb address unlike the new chipsets that are 8gb+.

If your running XP it is more than enough. For Vista, it is fine, but as you know vista uses every bit of memory if it needs it or not. Just make sure you turn off, word, photoshop, etc before playing.

I say if you like vista stay with vista. If runs fast with 2.5gb, I think OS performance are a little better since SP1. If you are not dual booting then you'll never know exactly what you are missing. :) I went to vista with my M7700 and I won't go back with my M9750. I don't have any issues that would justify that pain of migrating my data back to XP. All my apps and games run fine. I never crash.

Does this also stands if I have a low res 1440x900 screen? or only for high res 1920x1200

I want to play current games like crysis, unreal 3, starcraft 2 and call of duty 4.

I already have on 7950gtx and im deciding between the second 7950gtx or buy two 8700gt

Edit: I have a 2ghz core 2 duo, raid 0, 4gb memory and a 2gb SD memory to enable readyboost.
Readyboost makes the memory mark on vista bump from 4.5 to 4.9 :p

Technically the 8800 GTX will work in the M9750. But there is no publically available card that fits in the M9750.

Once there is a card available there is no guarantee that the M9750 will support it right out the box without a BIOS update. If it does need a BIOS update than we are at the mercy of AW. Which won't release anything for a while after the M17x is released. There is a 90% chance that AW will drop the M9750 and never look back.

If you really want a 8800 SLI at the price of a M9750 you'll have to wait for the Clevo's drop in price or wait until this time next year when the M17x's drop to $1299.
