Hey guys,
this is something I've also noticed not sure if it's common function of the LED display or not as this is my first LED LCD.
Whenever I view dark-gray's I can see a grain/static, that shimmers you could say, it's almost like film grain, or using a digital camera in poor lighting. It's a very fine grain, not sure if it's normal or not I have never seen this on a LCD, though I have on defective Plasama TV's.
This seems to only occur on grays, view the Alienware website link below to know what grays I mean.

your lcd seems to be going out. could be the inverter going bad. time to rma for you sadly
-
the effect is known as pixel jitter.
its actually a pixel clock timing issue. different drivers may fix it. -
Going out? It's not even three weeks old which is the amusing part.
Xeroxide, I'm currently using the display drivers off my Resource disk (nothing else). Recently did the video bios update, among all other updates available other than the drivers.
I'll update to the latest Dell drivers and report back, if that doesn't resolve the issue, should I call Dell and ask for a replacement or is this normal function for these types of LCD's?
As I said previously, never doubt with the LED breed of panels, but in a Plasama TV it's BAD. -
i'm not too sure tbh, i've got the clevo installed and that required a little bit of work to get any drivers to install... not using dells obviously.
however i did have linux installed natively (right now it's virtual so i can't check) but i do remember the pixel jitter not being there.
i've just learned to live with it since it's only apparent with my ati card and that's not covered by dell warrenty.
need someone with the 5850 from dell to check.
since you've only been 3 weeks i'd give dell a call. replacement would be harder the longer you leave it. -
Just noticed that on mine right now. It's unnoticeable until you actually touch your nose to the screen. Then I can kind of see some "pixel jitter".
Personally, if this is a true defect, I'm just gonna wait for the R2s to come out and see if they can get me a nice SB and 6xxx.
edit: wow. Gets pretty bad on this color. http://i1037.photobucket.com/albums/a458/miahsoul/Grainy.png -
I'm not sure how to go about this situation either, I don't necessarily want to ship the system away and wait for a replacement (or do they still do it where they send you a new one, you stick the old one in the box the new one came in and ta-da).
But there are a large number of nit-picks about the system from my keyboard spacebar being seated poorly and lighting along the entire bottom questionable, to the indicator panel lights not match anything (they yield a different color), a weird paint defect on my palmrest and "selective" operating touch pad buttons, and oh the paint defects on the lid (looks like a dent but it ain't more like a paint run/build up). Laptop has never left the desk and my kid is to young to crawl.. lol
Aghhh Miahsoul, why did you post that image now it's REALLY bothering me. I'm gonna notice this all the time as I'm a graphics designer and I get nose-to-glass all the time. I can see it without being close on that image though, ewugh. -
yeah i'm seeing the same thing, so it may be normal. but the image is fine on my external monitor.
-
it may be a grounding or interference problem.
quite possible with all the bling bling lights and circuitry in the laptops.
if we could modify the pixel clock/refresh by just a little, might be able to stop it all together... the question is... how? -
Well it would appear it's normal than? Hm man would it suck if our screens died on us.
That's what I assumed it was, interference or grounding, or a defect with the LCD itself. -
i think it's the former, i've had it for a while and just ignored it. with lcd's i've had the unpleasant experience in the past of swapping one for another only to get a starry starry night of bright pixels... i literally had a constellation of them, and was told that's "normal"
