So now that HDMI 2.0 is out, I'm wondering whether an upgrade to next year's video cards will also upgrade my notebook (AW 17 R5) to HDMI 2.0.
While I'm certain the cards will support HDMI 2.0, I don't know how it works with regard to the existing ports. Or do you replace the actual pluggable HDMI port in your notebook together with the card?
Supposedly, most of today's high-speed HDMI cables are going to work with HDMI 2.0, so maybe this is not going to be an issue at all.
Does anyone have any information/conjecture on that?

i thought hdmi 2 is just a cable and it would work with existing hdmi connectors.

backwards compatability you mean ? Obviously the hardware must act differently to take advantage of a new standard.. but its like usb 3.0... you can connect a usb 3.0 device to a usb 2.0 hub , it will genrally still work, just slower/less capable.... like half duplex, needing a handshake inbetween negotiations before it switches from send to receive instead of sending and receiving at same time...
just saying

In laptops it wouldn't be about the video card. HDMI 2.0 is a cable standard but the plugs on the sides of laptops would obviously have to be updated.

I doubt it'll even come with next years model. They seem to have a tendency to use as inexpensive of technology as possible. I'd expect the $1 in savings, and 1.4a.

We would have to wait for any newer models to see if they have that available.
