Hey guys Ive just een trying to update to the 179.13 or 180.42 drivers but none of them install using the have disk method or running from the setup.exe. I get the error Cannot install driver for 8800GTX Access is denied. I am running Vista 32bit and I am the administrator. Googling did not yield anything useful.

Mortis, if you have the 8800M GTX and would like to update to the 179.13 drivers, refer to this link and scroll down to dwend's post. He has provided instructions on how to install the drivers.

If you would like to update to the 180.42 drivers, make sure you have also downloaded the modified INF file. For the 180.42 drivers, make sure you follow the instructions below:

I have been following those instructions while trying to install the drivers. I have installed drivers before so I know how to do that. However, I havent updated my video drivers in a while and Im stil running the 175.x series. I tried updating te driver with te old one still installed as well as the usual method after uninstalling. Both did not work and I had do to a system restore after uninstalling the driver because a new one wouldnt install either from the setup file or using the have disk method.
It just tells me that it could not install drivers for 8800GTX or 9800GT because "Access is denied"
I believe it is some sort of registry issue. I dont think its a problem with the driver or the installation method.

Are you using Vista? Try installing in "Safe-Mode"

Also make sure you have an administrator account in vista.

One question, you aren't in integrated graphics mode are you??

Make sure that you are in this mode, then reformat your hard drive. Or even better yet, "AlienRespawn." Then try to install the new drivers again.

I checked, Im using dedicated graphics (8800GTX) so that couldnt be the problem. I don't realy think formating is an option for me. I could only divide my 200 gig HD into 2 partitions (Thanks a LOT Vista) of which the primary is 120 GB and the scondary is 60 gb and there is like only 25 GB free on my primary disk so I have way too much stuff to backup and do a format.

I did come acros the following article, would this help?

    http://forums.logitech.com/logitech/board/message?board.id=bluetooth&message.id=4357

It involves rebuilding Vistas driver databases or something. After it is done would I need to reinstall ALL the Alienware device drivers?

You can try it. But, but before doing so, you'd better backup your data to an external HD or something just in case the unexpected happens. It'd be best to reinstall your drivers and start fresh afterwards.
