Hi to all respected members and seniors,
i m a newbie from india just got my alienware shipped to india after a lot of headache.

THIS MACHINE IS AWESOME BUT A LOT OF TROUBLES HERE. so please do help me

    1) My battery always says not charging when i connect my a/c but id does charge when its in shut down state

2)my brightness setting fn keys never worked i.e F4 and F5, but on the first run i guess they did.

3)my touchpad keys are so damn NOT QUICK Responsive, when i hit the wi-fi key, it will kinda take 5 secs then respond

4)so, i called the dell support. they asked me to update me bios and another drivers, but for the time being i just updated my bios

and viola my Raid 1 config was automatically turned 0, i can see my mirroring drive now.. :( i m pissed

btw, those problems were also not solved. :(

    P.S : i have M17x core 2 quad , 4 gigs, and 250x2 raid 1 config, and Nvdia SLI gfx.

    1) After installing W7 your battery status will most likely be shown correctly.
    2) Brightness settings are blocked by the video drivers, so installing the 186.82 might solve the issue.
    3) What about the rest of the touch-keys? Is volume control slow responsive as well? They are usually little slower than keyboard keys. But that's ok.
    4) BIOS updates reset the RAID settings, so you need to enter the BIOS and manually set it.

I suggest performing a clean install of W7 when you have the disk. When installing the drivers, follow the guides on this forum for best results.

    1) RAID 0 is for performance and your two HDDs will act just like one HDD with hard disk space is equal to one HDD space only so if you want to use both of your HDDs independently, not for performance, not for mirroring then you should not use any RAID at all.

I don't have RAID setup but I think options for it is in BIOS and pretty obvious to find out so just take a look around.

    2) 195.62 is the latest one and very stable. However you can't tell if it does not have any bugs or issues. It's very depend.

    3) You can apply the same driver installation order on Vista 64-bit for Windows 7 64-bit.

    4) Some people disable Hybrid SLI because they want to get rid of the hot 9400M which affects the whole system's temp in overall. However you will likely to experience audio stuttering/skipping which is an issue caused by PowerMizer when you are not playing game. If you want to get rid of audio stuttering while running discrete cards you will want to disable PowerMizer.

Audio issue does not happen in Hybrid SLI Save Power mode so that's why I prefer keep Hybrid SLI on and in Save Power mode and only enable Performance Mode when I need some gaming.

You can OC your system to gain some extra FPS in gaming or to cut off rendering time in 3D processing as someone has clearly shown off. Normally OC will lead to higher temp but as long as it's in the safe range then you have nothing to worry about.

If your are doing Raid 0, which writes your infor to both HDD's, then you will have a performance boost. Raid 1 will be the mirror. This is for reliability. It will enable you to have two identical HDDs. In the event that you have one die, you have the backup of it. If your in Raid 0, and one HDD dies, your out of luck. Everything is gone. Reason being that your failes are spilt with parts of info on one HDD and the other parts of the file on the dead HDD.

In order to enable RAID 0, you should be able to do so in the BIOS. Go in there and set it up. Assuming you have both HDDs installed you can select them for the RAID 0 option. Then you will have to re-install your operating system. I've never done it, I use my HDD as two seperate drives. One for programs and operating systems, one for file storage. Prior to re-installing your Operating system, your going to want to back up any files you don't want to lose.

Finally, welcome to the board. Hope to see a lot more of you around ;)

EDIT: Also check the owners manual that came with the M17X, there should be some instructions in there

I don't have my laptop with me so I don't know the steps, just go into BIOS, select RAID 0, and it should guide you through it, boot off the CD if you need to

EDIT: Once you enable RAID 0, it should be like re-installing the HDD to a single disc like normal. Once it's set up, in your my computer, your only going to see one HDD I believe, but it should be the combined size of both HDD's. Again I'm speaking from general knowledge as I have never setup RAID on my computer.

    That's a very wise advice.

And by the way, I believe the size of RAID 0 setup = the size of one HDD, not two combined. No?

Silly, I believe your refering to RAID 1 where everything is written to both drives, essentially giving you a "mirror" image of your HDD. It slows down performance because your laptp must write the information on two drives. The purpose of RAID 0 is to increase speed by simultaniously writing a file half on one drive and half on the other, which speeds up your write times because you have two HDD heads writing on two platters. The drawback is if one HDD becomes currupt, then you have lost ALL of your data, which brings me to the plus of RAID 1. One HDD dies, you still have a backup. Just disable RAID. RAID 1 = slower yet safer, RAID 0 = faster yet more of a risk. Nice pic btw ;)

Oh yup I miss the concept. I know what RAID 1 is and I know the purpose of RAID 0 but I somehow always thought RAID 0 will recognize only 1 HDD size but that actually makes no sense. IDK why I thought like that :D

    Thanks!

It recognizes both but acts as one HDD, so in "My Computer" your only going to see one.

Time to google leah dizon... :D
