    i just descovered that it doesnt even shut down if the dvd rom is placed in.

    i tried a vista recovery cd and it didnt work.
    and a Vista x64 msdn didnt boot too it just stops like the others on the loading screen.

    i had to place the hdd in other laptop to be able to install vista.
    i tried ubuntu it works fine.

    safe mode dosnt start too and dosnt detects the dvd rom.

    Can you also provide me the exact System Information, I want to compare your configuration and problem devices with kenny-pit
    To do so,
    1) Run->msinfo32->Enter
    2) Inside msinfo32->File>Save
    3) Either PM me that file or upload to somewhere and give me the path.

    So far I found these are the problematic devices and causing issues. They do not have any drivers installed for them

    You have 3 problem devices

    1) Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P)
    2) Ricoh Card Reader
    3) Infrared Controller

    I will look for drivers for them and share with you

    What's the blue screen say anyway? Just the line at the top is fine.

    Example: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA

    That's usually there when you have faulty memory.

    findvikas, i am gettin my new m17x next week...i'm definitely interested in following your instructions to upgrade to 64bit to utilize my 4gb ram...my question to you is what happens if you run into major problems and possibly have to send it to alienware...will this void the warranty? also, since I have vista ultimate am I going to have to purchase a vista 64bit upgrade or the full os? last but not least, about how long does it take to do this from start to finish? sorry for all the questions but im' just paranoid

    It does not void your warranty by installing any software for the matter, but if you have to send it back you will have to send it in original condition (just curious if it was in original condition why would you want to send it back :p anyways) that means all the original hardware and same OS installed which came installed. I would recommend to keep the alienrespawn dvd handy and reimage your machine with that recovery CD.

    Also I would recommend you to change your order and get Vista Home Premium since anyway AW will not give you any media and you have to purchase a retail version of vista ultimate (32bit and 64bit media comes for same price and together)

    It should not take more than 2hours from start to end unless you ran into some problems. I would leave this to other users who actually tried their hands on m17x and 64bit since I own m15x

    thanks alot for that! unfortunetly my m17x is too far along to have them change the os from ultimate to home premium so I guess I will just have to go buy the retail version with both like you said. Now that you mention it though, i don't remember the salesman ask me about respawn...dangit...i'll call monday and see if they can add it, if not oh well. if thats the case, i can just download all the orginal drivers from alienwares site for later if i need them right? thanks again for answering my questions!

    hallo,

    thanks findvikas - x64 is running on my system and now I'm still having two problems:
    1. I've installed the "new" command center but I can't get my keyboard working to change it into any color. I've try the other version and your registry hack, but nothing......
    2. Since I use vista x64 I can't use TPM anymore - the driver installation failed......

    thanks for fast answer, I've take the file but at the moment I've switch back to x86 via acronis because I need a 100% working system at the moment. I'll try my x64 experience further next week.
    One think I can say, that I have install the Command_Center_1.28_SP1 on x86 and I only can control the color number pad - but with your m17x Theme.zip the control of the hole keyboard is possible.
    I'll keep ypu informed if I've any news

    for TPM you can read this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trusted_Platform_Module

    TPM is working now!! I used the driver from h**p://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us - on download search you have to look for TPM an select the x64 driver...
