I read through the thread advising the use of the phone over the website to get a better deal on a system. I was wondering, though. Could I use the online chat the same as a phone call? I was also curious if throwing out the price of a similar machine (Asus g73jh) would be appropriate leverage for them to come down from the price and match the other? For example:

    M17x config: 3200

Perks of the M17x over G73jh: Aluminum and RGBLED

    G73jh Config: 2900

"Perks" of G73jh: 920x, 4 more gb of faster ram, 2 Intel 160gb SSDs, blue ray drive

Otherwise the configs are the same, pretty much.

Mind you this is an example scenario.

Do you think they would match the price of the G73, considering its "better" hardware, or should I use an alternate strategy?

It's definitely worth a try. Remember that you have the cash so you have the power. Just say "This Asus G37jh has the same video card and resolution but is much cheaper", they probably won't know the details of the Asus. If they do know the details or try to state how great the M17x is over it, just feign disinterest at their reasoning. If it doesn't work, hang up, shrug them off and try a new rep.

Obviously, I want the Alienware. I figured I could config a better equipped G73 for less than the Alienware config I have and use it as leverage for them to come down on the price. Can I haggle with a dell rep through the Online Chat thing, or do I have to use the phone?

You have to work for a company that supports EPP, though, right? I'm a full time student. :(

If your calling Dell to enquire they already know that your interested. However,
calling is the only way to order IMO, its when you will get the biggest discounts.
I've been ordering from Dell for 20 years now and the discount I got on the M17x Has been the smallest i've ever had. however its was still 11%.
( in the past i've had 34%). So people, pick up the phone and ask for money off. If you don't get what you like or consider reasonable, say NO! and sometimes you'll get a call back from your hungrey rep.
Up shot...always call to place your order.......and....always haggle!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I say again....ALWAYS HAGGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read that one guy just straight up demanded 20% off and got it on his 3rd call. You might want to try that method rather than wasting hours on the phone, haha. Just keep calling back until you get one that caves. If that doesn't work, you can always try again with a more subtle method.

I'm not ordering yet, but my EPP is 16% off and I will work from there. I suggest you ask around and find a relative that works for Boeing.

LOL well good for you, each company & rep will have their tolerances. Its the point i'm making....Call and do your own deal...If you don't like it...call again.
Others deals fuel the fire, if you can quote a better deal....there is usuallly one to be had.
