I've done it twice. First time i told them i wanted to return it and get a cheaper Asus, they offered 5% back which i managed to squeeze to 10% (which is the maximum they will go BTW), however the condition is once you take that refund you forfeit the right to return that unit without paying a fee. I ended up getting manager approval to return that unit due to faulty electricals, so the refunded amount was just minus that refunded 10%.

The second time was with the unit i got to replace that first one, i called up and gave them the exact same story and got another 10% back.

I also bought advanced warranty when i bought it in the Us and lost it when i returned home to Australia and did the region transfer, so they even refunded me the amount of the warranty upgrade which i paid.

All-up cost of the M11x R3 in my sig after all refunds was $600 brand new from Dell (minus the HDD & RAM upgrades which i did for an extra $200).

Well you want to do this within the 30 day grace period because after that they charge a fee to return it so they don't care if you return it or not and they won't offer a refund to keep it.

I waited until i had my unit ~5 days and had tested it thoroughly. I had flaws to point out to them and compared it to some Asus G-series which has a full voltage quad-core for the same price. I said that i couldn't justify the cost of this one if i could get something better for the same price, and that i was thinking of returning my Alienware and getting the Asus G-series with the same amount. They tried to point out that i would have to wait up to 30 days for my refund during which time i couldn't use that money to buy the other laptop. I told them that i had another laptop/Pc to use so downtime wasn't an issue, and made it clear that the problem was justifying the monetary value. So they offered 5% i said ehh i was hoping for more than that i mean after the wicked coupon code i used i was only into this $780 so 5% was like $39 which was pretty measly, i pushed a little more and said how about another $50 to cover the cost and match the price of the Asus he said alright absolute maximum i can offer is 10% which is $80.

I accepted and he said it would go into the credit card i originally used within 30 days. It took about that long for me to get it, so i got $80 back from that and another $50 for the warranty that i lost and talked them into refunding me (it truly was them giving me wrong info - at the time i purchased i specifically asked and was told that yes the accidental warranty is internationally transferable, which it is not).
