My m1730 died and got a alienware mx17 with the t9800 processor and the nvidia 280sli as a replacement from dell . Just how much faster are the new systems with the I-5, I-7 processors and the ne ati 5000 cards. I do not play fps but do play RTs and roleplaying games.Should I look to sell it and upgrade or should this system be enough for me for a while.

Should be alright for a while. The only thing that might become a bottleneck is that processor. I'd say you could upgrade it to a quad-core, but you can't really, with that laptop's cooling solution.

^ no. The op sounds like he got an m17x r1 as a replacement, and yea he can upgrade his cpu to a qx9300. This would be the best quad core cpu he could upgrade to with his current chipset.

However, a T9800 is still a helluva good CPU.

Since I have nothing to do right now at work, I thought I would waste a post on claxdog's post...

He said he runs his PC at 3.66 and he wrote that on his 366 post... :)
