very very very unlikely they go above 220 watts...even though they should have started doing it about this time last year....

I actually received very good support from Alienware techs. Most of them seem to be operating out of Costa Rica, and they have all been patient and have helped me troubleshoot my problems. When they couldn't solve the issues I was having with the nvidia, they offered me a free upgrade to the ATI's. Although I've had some problems with the ATI's, partly because of my own stupidity, I'm generally satisfied with my laptop now.
My only remaining issue seems to be with Crysis, but I was only loading this game up to see how it ran, not because I was planning on re-playing it. If this comes up with a newer game I do want to play, I'll probably call support again to get it worked out.
@deltaone45 - don't really want to play it with one gpu disabled, defeats the purpose! Oh, and stealth is now disengaged!
@rhune - my cpu is the Q9000 -
you'll need to load at least one of the crysis patches first, before trying to play...that's if you didn't do this already.
-
You have to NOTIFY Dell within 21 days of the INVOICE DATE that you want an RMA, etc for full refund. This means that on the 21st day you can call Dell and start the RMA process.
-
Invoice date = day it shipped

i followed the guide that DHC posted on this thread to mod the drivers and i get the same results that others have gotten
did i not do it right or somthing? i followed the guide exactly -
SaosinEngaged Notebook Evangelist
I was wondering this as well, as I had the same issue. Is it supposed to display the old drivers or something, seeing as it's for a "modded" 9.12 driver? -
The display driver is 8.68, Catalyst is 9.12. Yea, I was confused too.
-
the CCC doesn't really tell you anything - why they label things this way is anyone's guess.
-
thsa't why i love mines HP fuegobird without all that (constantly annoyig fan noise, tech problem etc)
-
Damn this is sad how you pay all that money and for what, to play on a single card?!! I hope this gets resolved soon enough, especially with jokers machine as a volunteer.
-
SaosinEngaged Notebook Evangelist
As long as this issue is resolved, I won't mind. Other people have said it, you can never expect technology to be perfect. It's frustrating yes, but patience is a virtue with this.
Thanks to the guys here, I'm sure this will get solved quicker than without. -
I just got my M17x-R2 with a Core i7 820 and I got the flickering problem aswell, L4D, SF4, L4D2, Heroes of Newerth
everything is with this problem..
The odd thing is, the first time that I tryed the games, I had no flickering at all, started a couple minutes ago. -
SpinalGT, what are your system specs? Do you have the Cross Fire configuration, and the RGB LED screen as well?
-
My Specs:
M17x-R2
Lunar Silver
Core i7 820
8GB DDR3 1333MHz
RGB LED
Crossfire 4870
SSD 256GB -
And what kind of flickering? The full screen flicker a la joker and drake?
Or the flickering like brandon? -
I have to think here that if Dellienware had done even casual testing this would have been caught. A problem like this with a particular application or two is one thing.... every game on a top end system with Crossfire is just unacceptable. This system right now is their flagship laptop, there's just no excuse for something this major right off the bat and frankly raises major questions about their QA.
Now we have order delays because parts are in short supply? This all sounds like they were slow on the draw here.... make a big production at CES then you can't get the parts? -
Sleey, someone on my video commented on how he had both problems. But I accidentally removed it =S.
EMAIL TO THE RESCUE!
He had both what I have and what Joker has. Maybe I should download the modern warefare 2 demo (if there is one) and see if I have screen flickering. -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
So, what did you do in between the first time you played them and the later time? New driver maybe? -
Nothing quite like being on the bleeding edge of technology...
-
Once I get my power adapter I can test ME2, GTA4 and Left 4 Dead, I have all of those.
-
Did someone try to test that problem when connecting external display over hdmi?
-
How many people are there with the 820qm and no flickering in games?
-
I haven't actually seen a lot of posts from people with the 820qm so far.
-
That's mainly because most people around here either have the 720 or the 920.
-
Nevertheless there ARE some with 820qm but this is the first time someone is complaining about it.
-
im with him...external display?
i know some of you guys have hdtv's. they work as displays also..
someone?
anyone??

I didn't do nothing, I just closed one game and opened another, then when I opened Street Fighter 4 again, it started to flick...
My flickering is the whole screen, even before start playing, on the menus, it's flickering like hell.
I've found a temporary solution on a forum, but I don't know if doing it cuts some performance.
Disabling ATI A.I. under the 3D menu on CCC makes the flickers go away, but like, in L4D2 I'm getting no more than 40fps with everything maxed out.
My older M17x-R1 with SLI 260M used to get 60fps 99% of the time. -
Well, I have my HDTV all setup and ready to go, but I have a 720 on the way, and it'll still be awhile before mine arrives. But if someone wants to send me theirs I'll gladly test it out...
-
Haven't been motivated to. If it is the LCD causing the problem it will still be useless to me. It's either get it working as is or it doesn't matter.
-
I can understand issues with the 920 at 55w, but having issues on the 820 is confusing since its only a slightly faster CPU ( +2MB cache ) compared to the 720 and both are 45w.
-
ummm, aren't you waiting for the tech to come with your replacement?
i guess it's different for me and i keep forgetting. im in the computer repair field so ill try just about any and all ideas..especially while waiting for a replacement to come in. so i know what to look for and can rule out in the new replacement model...should there be a difference. -
disabling ATI AI solved my problem, but i'm seeking for more FPS on the games.
-
Totaly agree with you, They should also try different resolutions also beside the native RGB LED one.
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Still waiting on my R2, so can't confirm, but IIRC from comments here, disabling A.I. disables Xfire. so not a long-term fix. -
That's true, I was doing some tests and I got the exactly same fps with or without Crossfire when A.I. is disabled.
-
That's so frustrating, to have two expensive video cards and not being able to use them.
-
I don't know why it worked good without problems for about an hour and then turned into this flickering hell....
-
I would never let them send a tech out.
They are sending me a new system and I still have the old one.
Besides if it was the LED it would still happen with a single card. -
Disabling AI Disables the second card.
Just ran SFIV Bench. 1920x1200 8xAA.
1 Card ran at a solid 57-60 FPS.
2 Cards ran at 60 FPS until half-way through the chun-li Vs. Gen Fight. It flickers once, something similar to Joker's video, then cuts the FPS to 30 the rest of the bench. -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
I share your confusion. Hoping we can get some imput from other folks with the 820 processor, see how configurations differ, etc. -
Ill try this now, brb.
two cards: average of 59.95 fps from the beginning to the end, but with some eventual flickerings, I got like 15 flickerings, and my flickering is the whole screen, so annoying. -
I wonder if this is a driver issue.
CF doesn't seem to be working properly with the R2. -
All we need now is the report of flickering with the 720 and I would say then its probably a xfire problem.
-
I think its X-Fire. Why do the games run perfectly if you disable AI? The card is still powered on, just not doing anything.
-
Your using a lot less power "just not doing anything"
-
Thats true.
-
Well, then someone hook this friggin thing up to a TV/monitor, please.
Cutting out the RGBLED should reduce power (they are more hungry than WLED's). -
I can't wait to to have my unit and test this, but if I were you I would try an external display and different resolutions just to see if it has anything to do with the LED screen, after all, the problem is in flickering not stutering.
Having nothing but issues with the 4870's in my R2...
