This is most likely a OSD issue. Reinstall the latest command center and check that the alienware OSD process is running.

Also make sure the osd.exe is in your startup folder. I had the same issues, kept reinstalling the thing, then realized I had disabled it in msconfig somehow.

power off, unplug it, take out the battery and press power button for 20sec. put it back together and enjoy.

This worked for me.. but if I am using my laptop and I shut it and reopen it then about half of the time it will not allow me to change my screen brightness until I restart my computer.... any reasons why this may be??

Due to your system being an R1 with Nvidia chipset, I would have to agree with Inap, as this usually cures the problem also you can try what the others have posted as well. However, I have noticed that r2 owners (including myself) with 5870's cfx, experience the brightness control buttons not responding and I have found that with my system the controls only work when I am in cfx otherwise single card disables the option and the only way to adjust brightness is thru windows control panel. Hope this helps!
