Did a quick search and didn't find solution. I have the newer M15x and it was ordered with a blu-ray read/write. Device Manager says it's a Mata BD-RE UJ235A, so I presume the BD=Bluray Disc.

When I attempt to play a blu ray, either on Power8 DVD or Windows Media, I get either a "no disk with supported format found" - Power DVD, or a disk empty - Window Media message.

Is there something I need to do first to enable blu-ray playback?

Or...did they send me a machine with the wrong disc player/burner?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Sure you have, but if not try another BluRay Movie? Sometimes its the media. I don't see any firmware updates or listing for the Panasonic UJ235 under the M15x support page @ Dell. May need to give them a call. I would suggest comparing Firmware version of the drive you have and the M17x UJ235A firmware update but its probably best to contact Dell. Even though its most likely the same FW, I'd be a bit hesitant with flashing it.

Thanks for the suggestion...actually tried three different ones. With no luck, figured I'd expand my search on issues by looking past notebookreview (gasp!) and try a google.

Seems to be an issue with Windows 7 and the uj235a drive...I should have been prepared for excessive tinkering, moving back from a Macbook Pro to a Windows laptop, and knew going in that things would no longer "just work".

Ideally there will be some type of patch for Windows 7 to make it work (well, it works, just not with blu-ray). Micro$osft strikes again  .

LOL...unfortunatley mine shipped with W7, so no going back for me. Guess the good news is that I don't need to use it as a BD player atm anyway, so I can wait for either a firmware, driver, or OS software update.
