I just got an Area 51 m17x-r1 off of Craigslist for $500.

The guy had no idea what he had obviously. I priced all the components and it's well worth $2000+, it's not the NEW m17x but it will do for now.

ANyways... It came with the original Vista Ultimate + all the Alienware software.

It was bogged down to hell and back even though it rated a 6.9 in vista. Ran horribly.

First thing I did was turn it off and throw in my Win7 RC disk and formatted the HDD and install a fresh OS.

Finally finished all that stuff and then was looking around to see if you could get the "command center" applications back. And AW doesn't just let you DL them because they want you to "buy" them. This is a load of sh*t.

Is there anyway I can have Windows 7 and still have the apps to tweak the power settings and the lighting options. The software for the facial recognition or the finger scanner would be cool too.

Any ideas? I still have that "respawn" partition that they wont let you format. But the last time I tried to use it it ended up installing the original Vista but caused a BSoD at bootup since "chkdsk.exe" was missing.

Im pulling my hair out over this. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance. :]

I could be wrong, but I believe everyone who has installed Windows 7, has had to live without the command center functionality. Otherwise you'll have to get someone who owns an m17x to post their downloaded Command Center files from AW.

After fiddling and somehow losing that Win7 CD I have and having to wait for a new one. I ended up doing a fresh install of Vista x64. I will put off upgrading to Win7 if it means I get the Command Center.

I noticed there was a forum post with stuff on upgrading to CC 2.0, but all the rapidshare links were 404.

i am not sure where to locate CC, I would try a member of the forum that has a m17x or a m15x.

Does the downloaded CC from AW for the m17x run on Windows 7 though, thats the real question.

Im pretty sure you cant just download CC from AW. Since they charge you for it when you configure your system when purchasing. At least I havent been able to find it, and i probably spent an hour scouring that website, only to get forwarded to the same Dell support page 1000 times.

CC is useless, there is nothing in there you cannot do with findvikas's program.

Other then facial recognition which no one should use because it slows down your boot time and can easily be fooled

Perhaps its time we put together a stickied "m17x General Information thread" I was just noticing none exits, and a I just know all of these issues have been resolved at one point before.
