Just curious.
If I buy an AW unit let's say this month, but get a 2-3 year warranty within the next few months (since I'm on a student budget), how much is the % increase?
Does it go by time owned or is there a general markup?
-
I do not believe there is a set % or scale used based on length of time since purchase. One thing is clear - its considerably more expensive to extend after purchase.
If you want to protect your investment with the longest possible warranty, do it at time of purchase.
Just my 2 cents of course -
3 years general warranty is $300
1 year after purchase extended warranty is close to $300.
Just buy warranty from Squaretrade if you live in US. -
Generally it is much more expensive to purchase warranty after the initial purchase. It is recommended to try and purchase as much warranty as you can when you are purchasing the notebook. However we can all understand that money is tight for most of us.
Last time for example I bought my new notebook and also extended the warranty to the end of 2013. It cost me just under $200.
If I decided to wait and purchase the extra or extend my warranty down the road then it would cost more than $500 to $800 just to add a couple of years extra. Therefore I just decided to pay a little bit extra during the initial purchase for peace of mind.
Pricing also depends on Country locations.

That certainly doesnt seem to be the case in the UK. I upgraded my M11x's warranty about 3 days before it was about to expire for £100 less than the current price on dell.co.uk for the m11x.

When I tries to extend the standard Dell warranty on my M1340, they said it would cost like $350 for one year. I was able to talk a rep down to $279.99 though. But, mine was 2 months out of the standard warranty.

If you didn't buy the extended warranty when you got the machine, it would probably make more sense to buy from Squaretrade.
Another option I saw, and one I'm seriously considering for my incoming HP, is actual laptop insurance from Worth Ave Group. They offer 1-, 2-, or 3-year plans with accidental damage and theft protection. You also get a choice of deductible from $0-$100. They have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau as well. -
I just purchased an additional 2yrs of warranty for my M17x R1 (that im having issues with) and it was 299 for 1 yr + 129 for 2nd year so about 450usd total. Kinda pricey

I threw it out, but Dell sent me a lovely little flyer a month after I got my M15x, and it was at least 50% more expensive to purchase a warranty after the fact. Definitely something you want to do up-front if you're considering it. They also do 2 year warranties, but you have to order your system over the phone to get that option. It was pretty cheap, too. They'll barter with you for it, if it means getting the warranty vs not getting it.

What about adding an extended plan within the first 21 days after taking receipt of the system?

That bs really ticks me off, they are doing the same thing with me. I tried to upgrade the shipping and they say they cant change anything. I tried on the 12th, when my laptop isn't set to ship until the 22nd. Makes me less excited to have bought a dell... -
