This little guide explains how to make the desktop Catalyst Drivers install and work with quite all ATI Mobility Graphic Cards in your notebooks.

At first you have to download the Full Catalyst Software Suite of the newest driver here and the Mobility Modder here. Install Mobility Modder first, than start the installation of the driver.

Than click “Install”. It will extract itself normally to C:\AMD\...

When the Catalyst Install Manager opens click “cancel”.

Start the Mobility Modder, “Browse” to the location where the driver was extracted (e.g. C:\AMD\ATI_Cataylst_Windows7_8.612)) than click “Modify” and wait. After the MM finished “Close” MM and browse to the location of the now modded driver.

In this folder you find the exe “Setup”, double click it and follow the installation.

    Not really difficult ;)
And remember, a newer driver will give you normally better performance!

I hope this guide is understandable :p

    Greetings
    Julian

    Talking about drivers, 2 questions.

    1) ATI started releasing W7 notebook drivers right ?
    2) Do those drivers scale properly at 1680x1050 ?

    Hi CoolMinE

    1) yes and no^^ They did but 9.5 doesn't support Mobility cards.
    2) Hm, I am not sure but that's the method we are using since öhm ... a long time^^ And I know you always say "I need a special version" :p
I only have 1440x900 so, sry I don't know but I guess not, you will have to play your games with 1680x1050 ;)

    Greetings

I just had a new thought^^ Is the problem related to ATI or Mobility Modder?

May be during Modding, the sacling is modded aswell or the resolutions are not supported by MM ... Have you ever tryed the mobility drivers from ATI?

    Greetings
    Julian

    1) Wha? I'm on Win7 with my Mobility 2600 running the 9.5's without the MM (haven't had to use it at all on Win7).

nice work jules, but you should make the guide more generic, so users of other cards have no problems understanding it as well.

Sry I don't get it (because of my english may be), do you mean the title? I didin't use any card related explanations or terms or stuff like that? Did I?

    THX for your feedback!

@notyou: I tryed and it didn't install, may be it was an other problem^^ I just thought use MM as always may be I just didn't find the mobility cards in the supported list ... I am sry I don't even know wheather I tested it or just MMed it after not finding the Mobility Cards in the supported cards list^^

But I hope the guid is still ok :)

BTW I decided to name the 3870 to have a reason to place it here^^ I only know the guys around here so I was too scared to place it some where alse^^

    Greetings
    Julian

Presumably you're meant to uninstall the old driver first?

no, you didn't, it's ok. i'd just remove all mention of the HD3870 specifically and write "your ATI graphics card" or similar. might make it a bit more clearer that this guide will work for all ATI cards.

    also, +rep if i can.

W7 is a bit ... scary ;) Some times it will freez a deinstallation and than you even can not install a new driver^^ So I decided to NOT deinstall the old one, but on Vista, I would say the same as you.

    @Wizzo

"with quite all ATI Mobility Graphic Cards in your notebooks."

    Happy? :D

Something i noticed today (took me a while to realize it seems :p). My temps with 9.5 were 7+ degrees more on idle, around 61c. This a modding desktop drivers issue clearly since i just uninstalled them and went to AW's 8.57 (which is Catalyst 9.1 apparently). My temps at idle are now around 53c so thats at least 8degrees difference.

Think it has something to do with the fans since it seems like the fans are working more now. Theres nothing in the .ini file that controls the fans speeds (there are a few entries but not what we are looking for). So for now id prefer 8c less degrees than a quieter M17 and 61c+ idle on both cards.

The only problem i noticed with the AW drivers are the resolutions since i didnt have the 1680x1050, 1440x900 or 1280x800 resolutions to choose from but i found a way to add custom resolutions so im quite happy now :)

I still prefer final releases than leaked/beta ones :p

Lets see if ATI is going to release a notebook one as well, and if not lets hope they will release one every 3-4 months at least :)

9.5 is final^^ And I have with the MM version of 9.5 idle of 50 and 53°C ...

But may be you are right and it's because of my cooler

BTW SOOON I'll mod my "bottom" of the m17 and make a extra "thing" with more wholes :D

Nop I am even toooo scared to open the bottom untill I have something to cut out in the form of the bottom and than cut extra fan wholes in :D

Never touch a running system^^ It's like overclocking ... I just wait for the warenty to be over ;)

    Greetings
    Julian

PS: I know putting new termal paste on doesn't void the warenty

Think thermal paste should be the first to try since the results are pretty good 5-15c by changing the thermal paste alone ;)

Hey, Julian, I already drilled a BUNCH of holes in the bottom lid. It doesn't provide much better cooling.

Remember the fans have no wholes! Try it there and you will get quite impressive results :)

i wouldnt go cutting holes in anything unless you have another cooling method i.e laptop cooler.

i tried this with my m9700 and also with the m17, what i noticed is that the laptop gets hot under the keys so the mother/daughter boards will get hot, the only thing getting cooled will be processor and gpu through the heatsink.

with the cover on the laptop will draw air from the side as well as through the vents which it needs for the cpu/gpu but in turn will draw air across the boards.

but if like me got laptop cooler with two fans to force air onto the laptop then yep.

I opened my M17 today and realiced this as well ... I just coppied the "bottom platte" to make an other with wholes over the fans and give it a shot. I have a cooler as well but because of the way the cooling in the m17 works it doesn't cool quite well ... so I'll make a special version :D

BTW we have an other thread about this here

the only thing i have noticed in the past with modded drivers is they dont always fix the scaling issues

is there a relative easy way around this?

It depends on the OS, I think the W7 version donesn't need to be modded, the vista still needs the mod.
