Now you are just trying to pick a fight. Just because you feel the vast majority of people don't have the skills to overclock doesn't mean the option shouldn't be there. As a smart shopper I bought a m17xr2 6 years ago and through savy purchases and light over clocking I have been maxing settings on all games I've wanted to play since 2010. This is all because I had a quality mxm system and the knowledge to keep it going for years. When I look at the landscape now there is no way Alienware can over this to me again. As a smart shopper I know if my needs aren't met by one company I will need to look elsewhere. This is too bad but it is what it is. This does not mean Alienware isn't for lots of people it's just not what it once was.
@mrfox's dead laptops during windows 10 was a operating system / driver issue that was happening to scores of people regardless of overclock and has no relavents to this thread

So we're agree... Dell don't offer somethings that hardcore power enthusiasts can use today. + rep on this!! As I said in previous post.., I haven't killed a mmx graphics and no processor yet. But if I had played with newest Aw line and benched like I normally do every day..., I mostly has been without a machine now. You should put out a warning about overclocking of AW models. Somethings to think about!! Glad I didn't go that route!! It could be very expensive.Mr. Fox likes this.

I don't enjoy what stock hardware offers. I find that very boring and ordinary. I don't fault people that do, but that's just not my bag. Sorry, I cannot give a pass to products that don't live up to my expectations. Nor should any else. That's not OK.

How is it future proof if you can't remove the soldered components? Aren't you locked down to the hardware you picked at the time of purchase?

This one recently came out and it has a better gpu and lighter than a maxed out AW173R3 by 1.2lbs
Their competitor has a machine at 3.9kg vs 3.78kg but you get a 6700K / 180W GTX 980 / 1080p or 4K
It's not much lighter than the socketed option. They have a 17.3 inch at 3.2kg vs the AW17R3's 3.78kg
You can get a P670RG ( 17.3" / 3.2kg ) with equal weight ( AW15R2 ) and specs without that gaming look either. The P750DM (15.6" ) is only 0.2kg heavier than the AW15R2 but supports a better processorLast edited: Jul 13, 2016 -
Wingman 4k is same as phoenix? Can anyone confirm?

The Aorus X7 came out past few weeks, Is loud, weak chassis (just like all Gigabyte/Aorus laptops unfortunately), gets really really hot and thus drops performance and who in the right mind would buy a 9xx laptop now......
The AW17R3 might now be a bit slower, but it sure does not run hot, has a better chassis and a much better battery. But I would not buy an AW15R2 or AW17R3 now because all Maxwell laptops are simply too outdated to buy now with new GPU models around the corner.
I had the 15inch version for testing of the P670RG and it is a crappy laptop. Not in terms of specs and the base chassis is great. But that screenlid. I still cant get my head around why they made it so flexible and weak. I just didnt dare to put it in a laptop back because it was so bendable.Caladdon likes this. -
Don't try to sass me regarding my education. I don't ever need or want a nobody online trying to flame me.
I also certainly aren't feeling insecure to keep my enjoyment of running my Alienware at stock a secret. Accepting stock performance is not something to be ashamed of or even criticized for. The Gtx 980m is a superb performer and my Alienware 15 runs everything I game on maximum. No ifs or buts. It works. And being something that's actually portable helps too. Kinda important that.....
There's no hassle and when the day comes when I do have to upgrade I'll accept it and keep this system as a back up. I don't lose because I would have already got my money's worth several times over using this system.
So by all means, chase away and overclock and literally throw your money away trying to go for the "best" in the tech world. There'll come a day when it hits you just how much money you wasted hunting something, that in and of itself, was a complete act of utter futility.rinneh likes this. -
You'll run out and buy and new machine to get an upgrade and you're saying buying BGA is cheaper than upgrading? Who's throwing money away again?
Initial buy in to a socketed beast might cost more a fraction more but one doesn't need to throw the baby out with the bathwater come upgrade time. Just pawn of the old gpu and slot in the the new subsidised unit. Disco.
. -
It must be age creeping up on me - increasingly I find myself in the "Ah, what's the point in upgrading and playing around with my system, I'll just replace it when it's not powerful enough" camp. I do think it's a shame that socketed systems are being phased out in terms of repairability - although the last two notebook failures I had were motherboard related, so BGA wouldn't have been an issue anyway.
-
No TBoneSan. I'm not throwing money away.
MXM systems are usually considerably more expensive.
My computers usually last anywhere between 3 and 5 years. I get my usage and don't have to worry about ripping parts out to help pay for increasingly overpriced components to slap in my aging system..... or that they might not work.....or might not be compatible ......or even that they might suffer some minor damage due to installation.
I get a fresh system replacement and the best part is, they are always getting cheaper for the full package.
When you're selling parts to help cover the cost of upgrades, I think you need to re-evaluate who's really throwing away money here.rinneh likes this. -
Considerably more expensive? Nope.
Why would I let a GPU gather dust and sit around if I didn't use it anymore? Better off selling it and having cash. Pretty sure you'll find many other marketplaces operating under similar principles. For many reasons, I'd much rather buy a spent second hand MXM module than a spent second hand BGA machine.
Anyway, if ' changing GPU's out', working on your PC (aka Lego for Adults) or mishandling hardware 'worries' you that much I'll leave it there.
Not everyone's comfortable with taking a screwdriver to things or views these kinds of hobbies as enjoyable. -
I know that you're the type to get a screwdriver lodged in your skull as an education, since you clearly said that you don't have a need for opening up the laptop or anything.
But hey, not having to worry about maintenance, more power to you I guess? -
Upgrading hasnt been as pain free as in desktops unfortunately. If it was. I would consider it a proper way. But in Europe the prices are nuts. I paid 1900 euro for my 980M system. That includes everything. A 980M board in Europe or import is already around 800 euro's. The rest also becomes outdated in a laptop. Luckily CPU's now not that much but that goes for all systems. So upgrading is even more useless in that case. I rather see new technology such as thunderbolt 3. Razer core's are already reported working on the latest Alienwares. So it is nice to have that option.
You mistake priorities for intelligence. The smartest and most successful people that I know in life and are the heads of international firms started out as huge nerds building and tuning their own PC's Now they just buy a gaming laptop or PC premade. Simply because they dont have time or the mood to tinker with things that are not important anymore in their life. But these are the people you least would consider lacking in intelligence in the real life.

A down-stripped AW17 R3 costs +$ 3,100 here at home. What is most profitable for me when Pascal is ready?
I can throw my old graphics in the trash can, buy Pascal and still have a lot of money for other things!!
Yeah upgradability is a nice thing!! 15 minutes work and everything is up and running...

You hope that pascal comes in an MXM board for an okay price
MXM is already overpriced and so are the pascal desktop cards. if they DO come in MXM format imagine what they cost.
-
If Pascal give me a reason to purchase, I will probably upgrade. Do you think the mmx card will be more expensive than buying a low powered BGA machine with 1080 Pascal?Last edited: Jul 13, 2016

The Asus 17inch 1070GTX equipped laptop is said to cost about 2000 euro. If an MXM board costs over 1000euro i rather buy a new laptop than only upgrading to a new GPU once a 2 years. But that is just me.
-
So your mean I will have the advantage of buying a new laptop instead of upgrade? Cheaper and a new BGA model will give better performance? My P870 is still almost like brand new. No scratches and run as a champ 24/7. And still with over 4.5 year warranty before I'm lost.GTVEVO likes this.

Yeah..., I probably should!! And of course With the nice 6700HQ, because Kaby Lake isn't ready yet
Hope I can Overclock that beasty high end i7 processor like the one I already have

Yeah, might be able to hit an amazing 3.8Ghz for 24/7 use. Looking forward to some benches.

On 1 core? Maybe I can win the BGA silicon lottery? And squeeze an other extra 1 bin Overclock? But I think I need some help from God
and Liquid metal!!

You dont need help from god good sir! YOU ARE THE GOD.Papusan likes this.

Its never too late to get another Alienware. True system for enthusiasts.
-
Yeah..., I am still happy with my old AW17 also. Maybe I can upgrade to Pascal or buy a 980m for a dirty low price? The Mx processor is still a beast
and everything is maxed
-
Dude NO! NOT WORTH IT BUYING A NEW MXM. Just get a new system. #worthit #/s
-
Honestly, I do not know what I should do!! It's probably best I wait until Pascal is released. Easier to compare prices between new machine and upgrade the graphics card I think. Then I can sell my P870 for about $ 1000/1200 and beat the bullit and jump into BGA!! Probably the best option if I really want the very best performing laptop for gaming and work

Can't we all just get along?
-
Just get rid of your P870 and wait for a more efficient BGA machine with Pascal. You'll be able to play for 5 hours straight with Nvidia Battery Boost. You don't need more than 60fps anyway - That's OVERKILL
The human eye can only notice 24hz since that's what movies are filmed at
besides it looks more cinematic.

I know
But I'm more concerned about processor benching!! More interested in this than gaming. Would 6700HQ do the job for me? Or should I go for the better 6820? Maybe I rather should be world leading in bench with battery power? Hope Hwbot can create something for me
world leader in processor bench with battery
Yeah!!
-
They said the same about Maxwell when it first came out. I bought my R4 in 2013, worked for me perfectly for 2 years, then by selling the old 680M I get $400. Bought a 980M for $700 so : 400-700= -300
I'm happy to upgrade the GPU every two years, it'll be cheaper than a BGA system every two years and it will perform faster, longer and OVERCLOCK extremely well while BGA systems go up in flames or throttle or whatever happens to BGA systems.Ashtrix, TBoneSan, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this. -
