i think it came out 2005, so I'd stay away... outdated tech, beat to hell probably... if you need a cheapo notebook, get a second-hand thinkpad or something, they're usually rock-solid.

The X1800 isn't faster :) It's much slower now and with the new 9600GT it is even slower. In addition the CPU and HD are lacking.

Well i Already have a Desktop for Gaming just wanted to know how old is the M5700 (for a better price) and how long does the battery last (aproximatelly 95 minutes) i ll use it for VB Studio 2008 and Photoshop The Alienware's Style plus its price makes it unresistable what you think?

Oh if you are going to be using it for those programs you DEFINITELY want a newer notebook. The newer processors will render stuff quicker in photoshop and you can always add more ram to the newer notebooks so they have the ability to be more upgradable. I would suggest another 17" notebook because honestly you don't want to go with an older notebook that has no warranty.

Where are you buying it from anyways?

Faster = FASTER (Newer tech, more ram, larger HD, quicker GPU) quicker all around. That laptop I posted can be found in the dell outlet section (trust me they are GREAT computers in the outlet and that computer is BRAND new pretty much. I would describe how their refurb works but I don't feel like it now. If you wanna know post below and I'll explain).

You'd also have no warranty...on a system that is quite old.

AW warranties do not transfer, so if that laptop dies on you...well, too bad.

I'd rather you put $500 towards something newer or at least has a warranty.

The system is definitely capable of photoshop. Come on the T7200 is a really good processor and is very comparable to the T7300/T8100. Its not like its that old. I agree that buying a used system with no warranty is a bad idea, but it can very easily handle photoshop and what he wants to do with it. I have done photoshop and Pentium 3 xeons and P4's and it isnt very slow. The T7200 is a very capable processor, heck its faster than the T5300 I am using now. The real killer is that the X1800 is pretty bad.

Yea but the M5550 / M5700 were notorious for getting hot and whatnot. I'd say go with what I posted.

I agree with you here... I think people are bashing this computer mainly because of its age and NOT it's performance. I mean, heck the m9750 can use the T7200! It's not that bad of a computer...

IMO, if you don't mind not having a warranty, go for it! :D

The Area-51 m5700 was released around the beginning of 2006. With those specs it cost approx. $2000 new.

The x1800 does not have 512MB dedicated Memory- It only has 256MB, and will share another 1GB of system memory on top of that.

A 2.0 GHz Core2Duo cpu is the minimum you want for gaming or graphic intensive apps, photo editing.

I actually have the m5790 which is a special version of the m5700 series (purchased new a year and a half ago). The m5700 series has an MXM III upgradable CPU and GPU, holds 2 hardrives, and can be modified to run exactly what I am running. Battery life on a m5790 is roughly 1 1/2-2 1/2 hours if you are lucky. On a 2 1/2 year old used m5700 You would be lucky If the battery holds a charge at all. You can get a new replacement Battery here for around $100:
    ECS-Uniwill P71 (ODM m5700 series) Replacement Battery

    8600M GT is a class 2 GPU
    x1800 is a class 2 GPU
Performance of the two cards is almost identical, save that the x1800 is dx9c, Shader 3 and the 8600m is dx10, Shader 4.
Midrange Graphics Cards - These cards should be able to display all current games with fluent framerates but not all with high detail settings. Especially demanding games like Crysis, Age of Conan, or Mass Effect are only playable with lower settings. Less demanding (and older) games, like Fifa 08, Command & Conquer 3, or Battlefield 2142 can be played with higher detail levels

The 8600m GT is identical to the x1900 in performance.
    My x1900 Benchmark 3DMARK06: 3440

The m5700 for $500 is an excellent deal If its in perfect mint condition. (I would upgrade it though), while the m5750 runs around $850 with 90 day Alienware warranty.

I still don't think its a good idea but if you want to go for it just be warned that if you run into an issue, AW will refuse to help you. If you buy that new Dell I posted you get a 1yr warranty.
