this guide is to show how to overclock 2 ways .
First is BIOS
Second is NST (Nvidia System tools)
To over clock in BIOS turn on your machine and @ the Alienhead click F2 to enter setup.
When in setup push -> (right arrow) to reach the advanced menu.
After you are there go to the Bottom and select Overclocking
![]()
once there press enter where it says Auto and select unlinked
![]()
After you click that 2 more options will appear
Memory frequency
FSB frequency
![]()
FSB is the bus for your CPU and when you increase the speed you will overclock your CPU
Memory frequency is how fast your RAM runs
The Base speed is 1066, i recommend raising it by 10 @ a time and booting up and runnign a stress test on your CPU to see if its stable
ORTHOS (Duals only)
Wprime (quads and Duals)
OCCT
SuperPi
The other option is Nvidia System Tools
(this is the safest way since the computer will crash and restart back at stock clocks )
Download Nvidia system tools ( i use 6.02 and i have never had a problem)
only install the Performance Utility
once installed you will see this
![]()
that is with the FSB set @ 1333
to overclock just simply type in the FSB you want and click Apply
![]()
Note: i have the Highest FSB setting possible @ 362 Mhz so i would not recommend anything higher then that![]()
To overclock the GPU's
Click GPU under performance menu ( then device settings)
![]()
Then set the Clocks you want and then click apply![]()
just as an FYIthis is a after thought part
![]()
here it is in the wise words of Evilcoasair
ill edit this @ request because i am NOT very good @ presentation
Tools recommended
Furmark
HWmonitor monitor temps of your laptop
CPU-z to check your true CPU speeds and see the status
GPU-z to check your true GPU speeds and to make sure the clocks are set
SAFTEY QUESTIONS /FAQ
Overclocking the CPU does NOT hurt it as long as it stays in a safe temperature zone 10-90c. The chips are all the same with different locked multipliers. IE qx9300 = x2 t9400's on a single chip![]()
The overclocking on this machine can be reset @ any time. The BIOS can be cleared by removing the CMOS battery under the service panel which is removed with 2 screws.
If the CPU is overclocked to a unstable speed then it will just restart , which means NO DAMAGE
It does not shorten the life span of a CPU when you overclock. What does is the repeated heating and cooling of the CPU. With that said, CPU's made today are extremely tough and reliable and even with the overclocking and heating they will last longer then you will probably keep the laptop![]()

I can see you clearer than the bios screen....lol!
-
im in a store for the DSL and the lighting is horrible and i have the screen @ the LOWEST brightness
stupid brightness keys are not working
EDIT: i added tools and links
Also arn't i beautiful -
Any what phone is that, you never replied in the other thread?
Nice btw, hopefully people won't be like me and they will actually search and find this instead of creating threads/asking in other threads.
Also, I find it amusing that one of the most knowledgeable guys in this section has to go to a store to get good internet haha. -
HTC touch pro
hopefully they will use this .... i can add anything @ request
suggestions?
I am @ subway
ALSO i am adding better BIOs pictures -
.
There isn't really much else to add, except for maybe some more stress testing programs. It's not like it's a very complicated process.
EDIT: Do you guys have the Sweet Onion Chicken Teryaki subs down there?? That is my favourite from there, it's so good!! -
I haven't read it yet Moo but I already have to thank you for this!
-
yes we do have it
-
Hey Moo.
So you OC'd your ram in the Bios and OC'd your CPU with the Nvidia System Tools? When I saw the screenshot of Nvidia System Tools, it shows 333 and 345, I'm guessing this is the amount you raised your FSB?
I'm just a bit confused from reading on other forums about people OC'ing the CPU in the Bios by increasing the FSB. But both applications are so different. Could you clarify the numbers?
Also, if you could include a bit of safety information, would be nice. -
I would OC in NST first and find what clocks are stable, then set that OC up in the BIOS for a more permanent/hassle free overclock. -
What are considered safe temperatures for the M17x? I've had some stable overclocks but the temps go as high as 70-75c and I got a little nervous
-
You'll have much more stability OC'ing through the BIOS than NST because in NST you cannot change your memory speed. I believe Moo maxed out the FSB in the BIOS and pushed it further with NST.
-
correct Airplaneman
i overclock VIA BIOS all the time3.0 during the day and push it to 3.25 in NST on top of bios OC'ing
both applications do the same thing
they raise your FSB the numbers are the same and they represent how fast your FSB is going -
What are you doing to get them that high? Stress testing while running 3 instances of Crysis?I haven't seen my temps go above 60 for anything but stress testing...
-
over 90c i would start to back down -
But yeah, what he said. -
I'm still a bit confused by the interface of NST compared to the Bios, I understand they are essentially the same but the numbers seen very different.
Pardon me for being a noob.
It's a noob's guide after all right? -

the numbers are not different....... you can change them in either place
you can change them in bios or NST
the first picture is with the BIOS FSB set @ 1333 and in NST it will show up as that -
mr moo I thought u would have looked older, anyways I'll have to do some digging but I remember a teacher telling me that there is an equation you can use to set your clock correctly so I will digg
-
No i just turned 18 in January
-
Ahhh nevermind Moo, sorry I see now. So are you not changing the multiplier at all?
-
you cannot change the multiplier on a non extreme CPU
-
Hey Moo, thanks for the guide. Do you also recommend OCing the GPU by 10 each time?
-
Could you touch on some safety issues? What are the risks, will it decrease the notebook's life span? I'm sure these are questions you will see asked again and again.
-
i'll add saftey things
-
Nice guide. I'm sure it will be used my many...
-
Great guide, nice list of tools to check temps, specs etc. Can't wait to try it.

Is there a ratio to be observed between shader and core clocks for best stability with GPU?
This part was easier in ATI land lol -
yes there is a ratio you want to preserve
its escapeing me @ the moment -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
also I saw timing stuff in nst? for memory
and as an update, can't change cpu multi for extremes (bummer)
The factory clocks have a 2.5:1 ratio (2.4871 to be exact) -

Adriana Lima...Great choice! -
Adriana is my future ex-wife!
To fix my HW monitor trouble I picked up Everest, nifty little program. It shows every piece of information you could possible think of for your computer. -

I see. Busy tonight just trying all sort of CPU oc, gpu have to wait haha
-
Nice guide - thanks for the info. BTW, get a haircut...
-
i did

I only get my hair cut about twice a year....and yes, nice guide
-
-
for all the noobs out in the world...
THANK YOU!! -
Nice very helpful
Thx Moomaster.. -
Very nice but this is for the M17x right?
-
-
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
BIOS is always my preferred method as long as the option is there.
Although on the M17x the bios doesn't default with num lock on which annoys me to death -
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
who the hell uses the numpad as arrows.....make it num lock forever!
my MX 5500 keyboard is perma num lock (they all are), I LOVE IT -
-
Damn, that's one glossy screen. I can't see myself in my M17's screen unless it's off
-
Damn.. u're handsome.. hehehe
