I know their is already a good post on this, But I figured I would clean it up a bit.
STEP 1 : First Call - 1 - 800 - 283 - 2210
this is the tricky part that no one has explained.
STEP 2: LISTEN, there two different answering machines you can get! Both will get you to where you need to go, but they both require a different # to be hit!
A: If you hear music for a split second when the call is picked up HIT #3
B: If you don't hear music HIT #4 (even though it says hit 3 for tracking, trust me)
STEP 3: HIT #2
STEP 4: HIT #1
STEP 5: HIT #1
ENTER YOUR #'s AND THATS IT!!
Look below for a explanation of the different stages
below is courtesy of Spliner from the post

>In Production Stages (Must call the 800 number to get these >sub-categories):
>
> Kitting: This is when Dell picks your parts, throws them in a toter (square >padded bucket) and sends it down the assembly line to be assembled.
> Build: This is when Dell actually puts together your laptop. Some customers >have been stuck in the build stage for months. If all of the parts were not >available in the "Kitting" stage, then you might end up in a time warp with >this stage. You'd think your laptop would stay in the "Kitting" stage if all of >the parts were not there, but this doesn't always seem to be the case.
> Testing: This stage is where the system undergoes rigorous testing. This is >also the stage all the software are loaded on the system. <Added by >monocapt 8/15/07> Assuming everything goes well, testing is reported to >take no more than an hour or so before you will progress to the "boxing" >stage. If the first round of testing fails (loading your software/etc fails) >then your laptop will go to the EMR bay <added by surfasb 8/15/07> where >troubleshooting may begin with other laptops and systems. It is unknown if >this stage will be noted with a different stage result than "testing" at this >time.
> Boxing: This stage is misleading. The automated support line will tell you >this is when you are being prepared to ship. In reality, more is happening. >Usually your laptop was built outside of the US in Malaysia or somewhere >similar. In the boxing stage, your completed laptop is boxed up in a smaller >box, then taken to an airport where it is shipped to the US where it can >then be boxed up with your accessories and shipped. Generally this stage >takes AT LEAST 3 days. Reports lately have said four days is normal, mine >actually shipped in 3.5 days of "boxing". Some customers have reported >being stuck in the boxing stage for weeks. Other customers have called >dell, asked a rep, and found out that their laptops weren't even in the >"boxing" stage at all even though the automated line says they were (see >note). It has been suggested as well <by surfasb 8/15/07> that your laptop >could be sitting on a pallet waiting for enough pallets to be filled to justify a >plane ride to the USA. With the recent shortage in parts, this may be the >very thing that is delaying your shipment. It is obvious that this stage is >the most vague of them all. How long you will be in the "boxing" stage >seems to be undeterminable at this point. If your luck holds, it won't be >more than 3-4 days. Even though this stage seems the longest, it usually >means that your laptop is built, and in a box on a pallet somewhere. You >can breathe easier that all your parts are installed at this point and it is >only travel time that is ahead of you.
> Note: It has been mentioned (and confirmed by at least one person on this >board) that people who have called the Dell reps have been told that their >laptop wasn't in boxing at all, and that it was still being built. My guess is >that they (meaning the non-english speaking reps) are confusing "build" >with "In Production" (because the "build" stage is a sub-category of "In >Production") and that your laptop is in fact in the boxing stage as the >website told you. These reps likely don't speak the greatest amount of >english anyway, so watch the website (seems to be the most accurate, >even if it is delayed a few hours), and call the 800 number >(1-800-433-9014, only works in the US I am told) for more detailed updates >of the order status page on the web.
> Shipping: The stage in which we all want to be! It's pretty much self >explanitory, your laptop is being shipped via Dell's carrier of choice. There is >still room here for your order to be delayed, but it's not usually likely unless >Dell gets your shipping method incorrect. It is also evident that it takes a >day or two to get your tracking number. The Dell order status page won't >update with the tracking number right away. Even though Dell "ships" it on >a specific date, that is the date they sent it to the carrier. The actual >"ship" date from the carrier can be the next day if it's late in the day, but >just keep your fingers crossed that your shipping date is accurate.

Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
i guess they bypass testing on mine
-
Awesome post, much quicker then digging through the other post to find the directions. Thanks!
-
*bump*
figured some folks still could use this, they should sticky this somewhere. -
bumpity bump
-
you got a uk number and guide??
-
Pretty cool. Called the standard number and got an EDD of March 8th.
Used your method and got some more information. It's currently in the "build" stage and will ship March 3rd.
Imma try to call tomorrow to get upgraded shipping. -
Good stuff
-
I called from CANADA
Your Order has been shipped on December 1999 W T F ??? -
Still in Build...day 13...we'll see if the 19th is truly my delivery date soon enough
-
-
I'm guessing mine is gonna be on time and not early. bummer.
-
Mine says like 3/16 and IIRC my rep said 3/18
ugh, I hope these dates are inaccurate as hell in my favor :/ -
I ordered my m17x-R2 on Feb 3rd and it keeps getting delayed. First it was to be delivered the 9th then changed to the 15th now changed to the 22nd. When I call the number it says its in the build phase. Better get it shipped. Im in US.
-
Just called today and the number has been disconnected. I just got an automated voice that said it was an invalid dell support number and it hung up. Then I called back and got a spanish voice and all I could make out was Boost Mobile
Edit: I tried both numbers again and both are both routed to spanish Boost Mobile support. Can anyone confirm this? -
Dont actually hit the # button, just the number or that will happen.
-
I didn't hit the pound key. I called yesterday and got my order status, today it's spanish boost mobile before I even hit anything. Call em up and see if the same thing happens to you.
-
I haven't had any trouble with it today...
-
I just called today and got through. Don't touch any keys until it asks you for input.
-
just kidding. I last called about an hour and a half ago and it worked. Now it says "your call cannot be complete at this time". Maybe they got tired of everyone calling and disconnected it.
-
Guys I know how to work a phone. I am telling you the number has either been disabled or sold to Boost Mobile. I have gotten 3 different things calling the numbers.
1. Call could not be completed
2. This is not a valid Dell Support number, and then she gives another number to call
3. Rapid Spanish which I do not understand with Boost Mobile said at some point
Does dell change numbers usually?
Edit: Tried the same number and now it works, so perhaps there was a routing error on the part of my cellular provider or dell is having some phone issues. -
I had the same thing. I'm using AT&T....
-
SaosinEngaged Notebook Evangelist
Worked fine for me, got an updated status for my m11x.
-
Just wondering is this the same for the UK?
-
I too have ATT (iPhone) and have gotten the unavailable several times, I think it's their system. -
I use Sprint, so maybe it's just dell's problem.
-
bump for the new guys!
-
Yay! My R1 is finally in the boxing stage as of today! But it says the estimated ship date is March 5th
Dell never gave me an EDD before, but I can't imagine it'll sit in a box until march... -
Guess they're having issues again. Getting a "this is no longer a working Dell number. Please call 1-800" blah blah.
-
Works for me, using landline and Verizon cellular.
-
This phone number is driving me crazy. I tried on both my work landline and my ATT iPhone. I keep calling every hour because my ship date keeps changing
-
-
i noticed that it works fine in the morning/early afternoon, but probably they turn it off in the evening
-
steveninspokane John 14:6 - Only ONE Way!
I got that number, called right back, and then it worked.
So if I am in boxing, and it is not supposed to ship till the 2nd, what are the chances it will ship sooner? -
-
Well, I've been calling a few times a day since Wednesday. I kept getting different EDD dates. The earliest was yesterday, the 19th, the latest was March 9th. My laptop finally shipped last night or this morning and will be delivered this Monday.
So be optimistic -
Aaaaaaaaa! I'm going nuts!
Just called and got the following answer:
The order was shipped 7th of December 1999!!!!
What year is it, guys?
Where am I?
Oh my,...no... -
steelcurtain11 Notebook Consultant
worked for me at 9am eastern time.
Ordered on feb 23, in the build stage still, says it wont ship out until march 23.... aghhhhhh how lame. -
i called today about my m11x, ordered on 2/22, and they said it was in the boxing stage. estimated ship date was still 3/22 which was my original ship date. Hopefully they will update the ship date if it is already in the boxing stage.
-
All the reps I talked to over the phone just said it was in processing. I knew it was a bs. I called the number OP provided and it is is Boxing Stage which does sound better I suppose.
My order was placed on 2/14. EDD is 3/15. It's supposed to go out on the 12th which is the original estimated ship date. I hope I get it early.
Anyway, props to the OP for separating the information from the dozens of pages through which people like myself would have to dig through for. I vote we get that info stickied. -
No clue how i got so lucky but ordered 2/22 and it shipped out today. Will be here 3/5 which is friday!!! Just in time for my spring break in pharm school.
-
yeah it shud be a sticky!
Worked for me.. -
Ordered 2/17 a 1645 Dell XPS 16, and it is still in Production as of today 3/3. Ugg. Really wondering if I should cancel it as I need a laptop for leaving town later this month.
-
Mine is in the build stage right now, and I ordered it yesterday. I wonder how fast I'll get my PC if that's the case...
-
steelcurtain11 Notebook Consultant
Yesterday mine said it was in production, today it says boxing. Ordered on 2/23 , but the lady says the shipping date is still 3/23 , I don't it to sit around all this time if it's already done... grr spring break starts today too.
-
Well my delivery date went from 3/11 to 3/10 now. But still in production. Explain that one. LOL!
-
Kudos on this thread! I don't know how many times I had to tackle this question on the site prior to this....
-
Ordered 2/23 currently in " Boxing " stage EDD was 3/24 w/ NBD ... Hope I get lucky and get it sooner.
-
Just tried the number in the OP five minutes ago. Option 3 was the automated order status. Entered my numbers, and it only said "In Production". Option 4 went to hold music.. queue for talking to someone.
For you guys that ordered/received or are in "boxing" status, etc., it would help a ton if you'd state the system that you ordered, so we would know which ones are shipping fast, and which ones are being delayed. -
When you do option 4 press 2 during the music then continue the prompts, worked for me. I ordered a M11x, Cosmic Black, SU7300, 4GB, 500GB HD, Bluetooth .... If that helps at all.
How to tell your ~REAL~ dell order status !!
