you _do_ know the m15x has this Smartbay feature, right? It's _designed_ to be upgradeable/interchangeable...

Since the sarcasm probably didn't help much if you didn't know what smartbay was, yes, as long as there is a the type of drive you want exists for the smartbay, you should have no problems upgrading to one of those.

    Let see

CPU if you send the laptop and they will upgrade it.
    RAM
    WLan Cards
    Turbo Memory.
    Hard drives
DVD/ Blue ray drives as Smart Bay
Grapics card. 8600 and 8800 and mybe something faster but unlikly.

If you go on Alienware.com and look into support and type in the laptop name M15X you can get a list of stuff that can be done to the laptop.

I know that, I meant, do I need to buy it from Alienware, or can I upgrade a cd/br drive to work with smartbay, or is an upgrade unnecessary?

You NEED to buy the CD/DVD/BR drive from alienware, as far as HDD is concerned you buy a "cage" from them and add your own HDD.
