Just curious. I'm still running the 8.12 driver set because it was the only one giving me a fair bit of stability.
I'll still get the occasional "Display driver atikmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered" error, which causes a complete game lockup, but does recover after 10-15 seconds. Sometimes I'll get 5 in a row, other times I won't see them for days of playing.

Try this ATi CCC 9.4 driver for Vista 64bit:

my bro ran it for awhile no complaints but is now running the new 9.4 (he's 64 bit)

I have the simnliar specs, and I get about 20 fps in dalarn, on 1680 res., and ultra video settings.
I didn't noticed any major improvements to fps, or stability. I still get that display driver lockup issue, every once in a while. I'm using 9.1 though. -
Is it me or has ultra setting on WoW slowed down performance on the m17?
-
If you got shadows on disable them. They are a BIG no no for performance mostly because they are buggy.

Yeah, on my desktop, Ultra settings, shadows on halves my FPS on my 30" Apple from 60 to 30 standing still, and if I start to, oh I dunno, actually PLAY, it just tanks. It is just brutal.
Haven't copied over my updated WoW directory yet, so I haven't had a chance to try it on the OCZ. -
thats really strange
on my M9700 (2.4ghz, 2gb ram, dual 7900's)
i run at 1920x1200 sitting in dalaran on ultra with 20-30 fps, with the exception being the shadows
Does this mean the M17 doesnt improve wow performance? -
I'm on a nearly vacant server, so my FPS in Dal are a bit sporked. During peak times a /who of Dal has at the most 15 people, so it helps me a ton. I'm running on full resolution (1680 res), and I've got my shadows turned off, which has helped me shoot through the roof FPS wise. Otherwise I've got everything pretty much jacked. I'll tweak with the distance camera depending on where I'm at if I see things start to lag a bit. One thing I've also done that's helped a ton is I keep the laptop in a room that's got a really low ambient temperature (roughly 55-58 degrees), so that's another big help.
Thanks for the tips on 9.4. I'll have to give them a try when I get done with this bit of travel I'm doing for work. -

I do have shadows turned off, but everything else on normal. Its beginning to sound like my fps is not normal (i.e. 20-30 in dal)? My server is pretty crowded, though.
-
Yea dalaran with a lot people around is a killer. What AA are you using ? 4-8x ? Try drop it to 2x if you want better fps in dalaran
-
I mean pre 3.1, I always had my settings on the highest without any problems. I'm on Burning Blade (one of the oldest servers out there), population is pretty packed and jumping around Dalaran during peak hours were still smooth, fps went to 30-40s, but still acceptable in my mind.
Ever since 3.1 came out, with the ultra settings.. it just feels sluggish. Jumpy slow frame rate, honestly feels like I wasn't using an AW laptop.
My solution to this was putting it on high settings, with minor adjustments (such as detail quality to ultra, etc). This seems to make it feel back to normal, back to the feeling of having an AW system.
Still, I'm quite stricken by this.. WoW should be (and was) a joke on my m17 (t9400, xfire updated to the latest catalyst, 4gb, 64bit). Is it the patch?
On top of all this my keyboard becomes slow responseive and my HID disappears (when I hear an unsuspected 'USB has been recognize' noty). The best feeling is to have you wonderful laptop become defective after the 30 day policy (sarcasm). -
Ok,
I was standing in the middle of Dalaran last night at 1920x1200 8xAA everything maxed out with shadows on medium avg fps was 47-50 in naxx never below 60
That was with the offical 9.3 driver

Think you are exaggerating a bit there
x8 AA and medium shadows will probably drop my fps at 50 in ogr not a raid
On a side note, think the 9.4 perform poorly as far as WoW goes, used it for about 5 days now and kept getting low fps here and there. For eg, there were a lot of cases that my fps went down to 17 in dalaran. After that ive switched back to 8.12 (if i recall 9.1 was good too but kept getting an error every once in a while, didnt test the rest) and problem disappeared. -
WoW isnt particularly well coded so i'm not really that surprised that your having fps issues in Dalaran. Each new patch they release seems to just hamper the program even more, there's nothing wrong with your system so i wouldnt be worried
-
i think the lowest it went was about 22-25 when very very crowded after a server restart other night
Pete -
Im around 50fps in dalaran atm with shadows off and 2x AA
What drivers do you use ?
How's WoW Running on the M17's with the 9.3 Drivers?
