I guess I waited a few weeks too long to get a new Alienware with XP pre-installed. I was going to order a M9750 with XP, now they have no notebook models listed with XP.

They say they ran out of XP licenses. Does that make any sense? You can still get just about any Dell with XP. Are they just saying that because they don't want to mess with XP anymore?

I asked if drivers are available to install XP myself, got the run around. They say it will void the warranty. How does changing the OS void the warranty? This makes no sense. Two weeks ago you could get one.

Which model would be the best to buy and change to XP? M9750 or M17?

Anyone have inside info on Alienware? Possiblity XP will be offered again? I just really hate Vista, and yes I've used and worked on several PC's with Vista, even beta tested it.

    Thanks

m9750 because they have drivers actally made for it .... easy to find but if you can get them to work the m17 is wayyyy better for the money and future proof id reccomend that

considering xp is no longer sold it can happen the lisensces to go out nothing last forever and i have tested win 7 and i would take it over xp any day and over vista any day to

to be honest you have to get over it xp is dieing

Trust me, Everyone makes Vista seem worse then it really is.
I admit there are some problems in Vista and I'm not a fan of Vista but so far it has given me no problems and Windows 7 is even better!

-Just move on, XP is dying. The future is 64 bit and I'm pretty sure XP 64 bit wasn't all that great?

no it was pretty much not....any way vista is much better now so when you used those vista PC's they wern't super fast AW's there is not lag in vista on mine and i can kill some games and the updates fixed bout every thing driver compatibility is back to bout 99 percent ..... but if you really want a laptop with xp get a m17 and put it on there your self.

orrr you can get a white book its the same chassis without the lid its got every thing a m17 does but not the lid....any way there is a option for you

I'm assuming you want an Alienware for gaming? Go with vista, it's not bad at all, and it has DX10.

The M9750 is beginning to show it's age. M17 recommended. For regular users, Vista should be fine if not better. SP1 did the trick.

Yes, we can see that by all the posts :p

    -and your sig. :D

-But yea, he broke it in Windows 7, so as you can see XP is becoming outdated.

The M17 (Whitebook 840), also supports XP. The beauty of barebones is they always seem to support both XP and Vista.

Microsoft stopped selling Windows XP licenses some time ago. Some OEM computer manufacturers still offer Windows XP because they still have stock on those licenses (AKA license stickers). They will eventually run out of them.

Microsoft wants everyone to move to Vista and Windows 7.

Installing another OS on your system with Alienware does not void your system's warranty. It's just that they will not provide support for an OS they did not ship with that system.

You can find drivers for Windows XP yourself if the OEM manufacturer does not offer them directly.

Not likely, if they've run out of licenses it is not probable they will offer it again. Moidock knows people. ;)

Yeah, but not all OEMs have XP licenses in stock, the fact that one manufacturer has them does not mean that all of them are able to get them. XP licenses will eventually run out.

I'm not saying XP is completely dead, but it is eventually being phased out.

There's a difference IIRC between Netbook XP licenses which MS will still sell for machines with certain specs, (Atom Processor, under 200GB HDD, 2GB or less RAM, low end video) and a regular laptop. For regular computers, it's dead.

Thanks for the info everyone. Now to decide what to do.

At this point I guess I could wait longer and get Win7, but if I hate it as much as Vista, chances of going back to XP on a even newer notebook get slimmer. Dammit why didn't I order weeks ago.

    Hey OVERBURN,
xp is not outdated and dieing. It's a matter of perception, huge (huge) ammounts of advertising dollars, and strong arm tactics on computer manufacturers by the single largest O.S. manufacturer in the world.

As you can see already by the posts, many people have embraced Vista and even Windows 7. I have used both Vista as well as being a beta tester for Vista 2 (Windows 7) . In spite of trying very hard to embrace these O.S.'s I still don't like them. That is my choice and may be your choice as well.

XP is indeed older than Vista or Windows 7. That doesn't make it obsolete, it's just a different O.S.

Direct X 10 doesn't make me want to shout to the heavens so I really don't need it.

I've used "Window Blinds" for years now which gives you all the eye candy Vista can muster and it doesn't hog any system resources.

Remember OVERBURN, latest doesn't always mean greatest.

    Rob41 :D

I'm very familiar with XP Pro Volume License (Corp) and I have no problem screwing Microsoft and using a copy. I feel they screwed me first by practically demanding I go with a new OS that I despise, no matter how many times I try it or reconfigure it, I freaking hate it.

I was just worried that I might encounter problems finding all the XP drivers for the M17 or the M9750. I'm not a gamer, so if I order one, it'll be more of a budget configuration. The Alienware styling is what I'm more interested in.

    Thanks

You wont find the low level acpi drivers. You'll have 4 unknown devices in the device manager because of it.

    Which model? M17? M9750?

    M17

I spent a few hours getting all the XP drivers together for my new M17 when I first got it.

They're all out there and it's doable.

Well, you can still buy XP, you just have to buy a Vista Business License first and then downgrade, thing is.... Alienware doesn't sell Vista Business ;)

It's doable and the laptop will run fine.. you're just going not going to have the acpi drivers.
