Hey guys well aftervwaiting forever my uncle gave me my new laptop today. I was so excited I set it up and installed call of duty 4. I am very disapoimted the game will play then a every few seconds it skips/ freezes for a second. Have no idea why fiery thing I checked was stelth mode and I am not in it. It does show the 280 as my card. I disabled the intergrated because that is what I thought was causing the lag with no improvment. Please help if I can't get this fixed in 2 weeks/ end of vacation I am returning it. I didn't pay 3900 for a laptop that can't even play call of duty 4 even with no setting changes. (though it should play maxed just fine. Thanks Brian ps sorry if it has been covered before I tried to search buty iPhone will not let me use it? It's my only Internet right now.![]()

COD 4 has a lag problem its in the game istself
-
I had never noticed it before with my pervous quad 9550 with a 9800gtx? Why would it be any worse on this one?
-
Theres other M17x owners who reported the problem as well . Did you update to the A02 bios yet btw ? you could be seeing that stuttering where it drops frames because of the Quadcore.

CoD4 has a problem, and has always had this issue. The game will randomly give you lag spikes and freeze in 1 frame for like 1 second or so.
Its never been much of a problem because after a while of playing the game its not supposed to happen anymore.
Try installing 186.42 WHQL and install Windows 7 x64 and you should be smoother sailing. -
I can play it just fine on my single 260m.
-
same here but i stutter a bit
-
mine has been smooth as eggs since the last time i played it. i turned off many things that aren't needed for multiplayer, like DOF and all that though.

As soon as I get back to uncles house I will check bios and video drivers. Right now I am enbarissing my self reAlly bad playing golf. Can anyone tell me how to check the video drivers i'm so lost with vista

I have an alienware m17x quad core with 2xGTX280 in SLi and I experience the lag issues with COD4, COD world at war, Crysis Wars & Warhead. This issue doesn't happen while playing the competitive ProMod for Call of Duty games but only in the non modified versions. The only way I have been able to get rid of the lag spikes is to lose 10FPS and turn off SLi and use only 1 video card... There has to be another way because i just don't think a game as demanding as crysis should limit me to 1 video card. I was also wondering if this is only an issue with the alienware or with desktop 280GTX cards in SLI as well?

You guys are scaring me. How can COD4 be lagged on a single GTX 260 or 280 or SLI? I used to play it smooth like hell, all settings maxed out at 1680x1050 on a desktop 8800GT 6 months ago :-O Is this a problem of the cards? Or the M17x itself? Or other reasons like your machines are virused? I can't believe it if my M17x can't even handle COD4 :-O If it doesn't how can I play MW2 and AC2???
-
Try a chipset update, force install it.
It should not stutter for you guys, no stutter on my XPS M1730 in SLI mode on either games you mention. -
Hmm strange indeedy.
I guess you could just,
Make sure drivers are up to date,
Check temperatures (Although the m17x is solid when it comes to them)
Check HDD activity (Windows defender running scheduled blah blah, i had a problem with this.) -
I can handle all games very well except the ones i listed. Its not possible for me to use any drivers other than the ones on the dell website so using forceware or anything else wont run. I have an 8800 in my desktop and it runs very smooth. Maybe alienware needs to update their drivers thats why im here to ask if these issues exist on desktop 280GTX cards in SLi?

Heres a couple of things to try.
Try updating to the 186.86 Mobile Nvidia Drivers from the official Nvidia site, these gave me much better performance than the stock dell drivers.
Once you have done this open up the Nvidia control panel, go to performance and quality settings and then 3d settings. Then select Call of Duty 4 from the list. Then manually force 4x antiailising through the control panel.
when in the game turn off antiailising and turn on the dual video card option.
this should give you 4xAA and get rid of any performance problems, worked for my XPS M1730. I'll install COD 4 on my M17x later and let you know how it works.
with your hardware it really should not go under 60 fps ever in multiplayer.
As for crysis I would give up, unless you are prepared to play the game at a low resolution and with low video setttings you will not get good performance, although I've heard it does run better in directx 9. I have seen tri sli octacore pc's unable to cope with crysis so trust me when I say that game is not well optimised.
Final suggestion is to overclock your processor, I know some of the M17x quad cores can be around 2ghz, I doubt that it fast enough for the above games. Some of the forum members have put together a good guide on how to do it. Just be careful it can make your system unstable. -
Did you read my above post? The alienware m17x has issues with all drivers but the basic non beta driver. All drivers for laptop 280GTX cards or Nvidia site doesn't work even after modded. I did ask whether anyone knew if the 280GTX for a desktop with both cards in SLi lags in Call of Duty and Crysis. I usually get decent FPS in crysis but I'm experiencing lag spike clearly related to the SLI enabled. I am wondering if they need to finalize their newest drivers or if its a video card issue. Because I don't think its right to pay alienware for an issue that could be their fault.

im having a huge issue in borderlands right now, i even turn it down to 600x800, anything holding a gun drops all frames

Is this something we call stuttering? I will be very frustrated if my M17x cannot handle COD4 smoothly...
-
I am getting ready to order a M 17x. Was gonna build like yours but after reading all these post I not sure how to configure it. I would think Cod4, Crysis etc. would all be able to run at high settings?
I can't play games smoothly/with no lag
