So after reading many reviews on Alienware products the one biggest thing I see is this. You can get the same power, cheaper from other places.

So I went to a few sites and tried to replicate the build that I have ordered from Alienware *the Superman version* and first off...I was unable to match some of the features at all, and when I did try to get close the price ran over.

I am thinking that Alienware has this rep simply because of a few bad apples. Who happen to be really loud.

My experience has been great so far. Day 4 after ordering and it is at Stage 6. I have no doubts that it will be shipped and in my greedy little hands by late next week.

Oh, and since no one else has really used Vista enough to review it...I will try to write one as soon as I get my system. I will have both Supreme Commander and WoW to use as tests. Oh and some other MMORPG's like Dark Age of Camelot and City of Heroes. I may even go buy a few other games just to test its gaming ability.

There are a lot of Alien haters out there - some have bad systems, and bad service; others are just repeating what they've heard. Alienware markets their computers as "the best/fastest/etc" so people are not going to be happy if they have a problem (can't blame them). There are also quite a few satisfied owners - I own 3 AW systems). I believe the pricing used to be higher than it is today ... my recommendation is people should always decide what specs they want and then take the time to comparison shop. Sounds like that's what you did.

Good Luck with your new system ... love the Superman look!

And there lays the problem IMO the performance tends not to live up to the price tag.

That may be your experience, or your opinion. I've been fortunate ... my m5500 is going great guns still, and my m9700 is doing just fine with all my games and other apps.

I'm in the market for a new desktop ... have done lots of comparison shopping, and Alienware's pricing is actually quite reasonable. Their marketing hype is similar to the other boutique builders.

Actually you do have a point, I replicated my notebook the best I could on the Alienware site and it worked out roughly the same. (paid £1300 for mine, works out just under $2600)

Note: Alienware don't offer the 7950GTX on their 17" model so I opted for dual 7900gs. AW only has 1MB Cache unless I'm blind..

Yep ... that's the current setup. The m9750 (with either 1 or 2 7950 GTX cards) is available for preorder, but won't be delivered for at least a month.

I know I was surprised when I did my desktop comparison shopping ... but, pleasantly so

The size of their desktop casing is enough to put me off. I don't think I could get 1 in my desk. The Mesh I have only just fits and sticks out the front by a good couple inches. Flat pack desks suck..I can't open the cupboard..its the only thing holding the desk up lol time for a visit to Ikea

I was one of the unlucky ones that had a lemon of a system. System listed below.

When my laptop frist came. It would ran at 110c gpu temp cpu temp was 100c then shut off. This was in a basic game Runescape java base. Or a few hours it would shut off reading the forums.

They had me try a few things like bios update and such. Then I sent it back.

FRIST TIME heatsink/fan and video card replace

SECOND TIME Heatsink/fan. At this time I was telling them it was a fualty motherboard. Why from what I see here the heatsink was replaced twice and gpu was replace one.

    THIRD TIME Heatsink/fan

    FORTH TIME Motherboard.

See what happen was when they ran Sp2004 or other stress programs While cold and the cpu would go up to 100c the fan would not kick on. Then they replace the parts and thinking the problem was fix. I dont know if they did stress program again? If they did and the laptop was warm the fan would still kick on.

I explain to the company in full detail even made a video. That when they got a clue. It showed the laptop going up to 110c there was a small paper in back in a L shape standing up so if any air hits it would move. Then the computer shuts off I had to wait 30 sec. Then restarted and the paper flys across the glass table.

I wish they Look at the problem better and I hope Alienware learn from this.

It is true most of the time, not however for your Superman line. Those are a wonderful value for what they are. Alienware does have the right to charge more for the same parts though, because an Alienware computer is more than the sum of its parts. They are extensively tested and optimised for the discerning gamer and have impessable style to match. It certainly is possible to get similarly speced computers from other companies for cheaper, but you can't get an Alienware anywhere else.
