I dont know much about laptop, (yes I'm new to this) there is this guy that is selling me a Alienware laptop M9750 with this specs:

    • Two Speakers with SubWoofer
    • #4 Hi-speed USB 2.0 ports
    • Express Card Slot /54mm
    • IEEE 1394a (4-pin) port
    • 4-in-1 Memory Card Reader
    • (SD / MS / MSPRO / MMC
    • #17” Wide Screen WUXGA 1920 x 1200 with Clearview
    • #512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT
    • #7200 RPM 320GB
    • #8x Dual Layer CD-RW/DVD±RW
    • #Integrated Bluetooth 2.0
    • #Integrated Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45
    • #Windows Vista® Home
    • #3GB Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz

His selling it for a real good price ($900) and his getting rid of it cuz he barly uses it. The laptop is in mint condition and works like new. let me know if it a good deal and if this laptop is good. Im not a hardcore gamer, I like to play games such as COD 4, Left 4 dead, fallout 3... let me know if it would run good in this laptop, thanks

It's gonna be kinda weak due to the video card. You can get better for $900. Look around for a used Crossfire M17 and you'd be GTG on those games.

The question is, and its one we can't answer without comparing to what else you could get for $900.

For example, currently on the US Dell website you can get an Inspirion 17 kitted out as follows for $879:

    Obsidian Black
    Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 (2.0GHz /1066MHz FSB / 3MB)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Service Pack 1 64 Bit
Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis
    HD DISPLAY 17.3" HD+ WLED
    Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD
    4GB Dual Channel DDR2 at 800MHz
    500GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
8X CD / DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)
    Lithium Ion Battery (6 cell)
    1515 802.11 Wireless-N Mini-card
    Integrated 1.3 MP Webcam
Soundblaster X-Fi Hi Def Audio - Software Enabled

Which brings tradeoffs, for example you are getting a bigger, but slower HD. You are getting a "worse" video card (though spot research says not by much) but getting more and faster memory.

With the Inspirion you are getting a warranty, with the Alienware, you might.

And around and around it goes.

Now if you are asking is $900 is good deal, I'd say it's not one I would do. While my situation isn't yours, I'd still take a step back, see how much/how long it would take me to save another $900 and go with a new m15x (if I didn't need the 17 inch screen) or a base model m17x.

That would be my first option. If that wasn't possible (it would take too long or I had to have a laptop RIGHT NOW), I might do it, but I'm leary of second hand systems. Burned too many times by friends in the past, you could say.

a single 128bit 8700 gpu will only take you so far. a base M17 for $900 would be a better deal and 2 generations newer. That M9750 is worth no more than $500.

At that price, I would say its decent, but you should probably haggle it a little, some of the tech is a little dated.

As a general-use laptop (e.g., browsing, IM, email, Office), its a solid machine, and can easily handle "light" gaming too.

If its in good working order, I'd go for it, but try to knock down the price a little....

That's a very poor deal. I've seen an M9750 very similar to that, only a bit worse, a year ago for only $400. And no, that's not a joke. (I say a bit worse because it had 1440x900 screen I think, 1.6GHz C2D and an unspecified GPU-probably single 7950M GTX/8700M GT, note sure if any others were sold with it)

You can get better than that for $900 nowadays, leastways in an M17.

yeah, i wouldn't go for the deal. unless you can lower the price and get two 7950gtx in there or even a single 3870, i would say ditch it.
