This laptop has been overdue. I`d like to see where it stands next to the dell xps1730 and the sager 9262, performance , temps and all.
    Anybody getting theirs soon?
I remember a lot of people saying so.

yeah, especially comparing it to the dell will be interesting. i believe the sager will beat it in benchmarks because of the desktop CPU and faster RAM.

well usually they give some review models to some websites so that they can put their lines in their ads and what not and only thing i see is from new york times but even they dont have anything in the review worthwhile other than "it looks like it came out of an invading spacecraft" that dont help alot

    here's my 2 cents:
i believe the m17x will perform similarly to the np9262, i mean, they both have 8800m gtx, but the np9262 has a quad core processor at 2.83 ghz, i mean who would think to put a desktop processor in a laptop.

that being said, the m17x has the flashy alienfx lighting, which i think is beautiful, but xoticpc.com has the optional paint job, which is sick. so, all in all, from what i've gathered....
DAMNIT there's the m1730... sorry all, this changes everything, some rich guy should buy all three and review them side-by-side... ne takers? nope?

    a guy can dream

what i can promise is this, if i ever win the lotto 649, that's the first thing i'll do, among other things

actually you forgot np9262 uses desktop motherboard as well, which means 1333mhz FSB against AW 800mhz, and DDR2-800 against AW DDR2-667.

If the AW comes with X9000, it might be better than your usual quads.
That's why I`m still expecting those reviews, some people were supose to get theirs already.

how can a mobile 2.8ghz dualcore be better than a desktop, 2.83gz quadcore? unless AW has a liquid cooling system in the m17x and can OC the CPU to like 3.5ghz, the sager's CPU pwns.

if you look at the pics of the insides of the m17x, the cooling seems to be like the m1730. the fan for the cpu looks bigger than the one in the m15x so it looks like the extreme might not downclock. each of the video cards in the 17x also has its own dedicated fan right on top of the card. the 8800 temps will most probably be a lot lower than the temps in the m15x.

so even tho it doesnt have liquid cooling you might be able to overclock it.

There's also the fact that it has been reported on NBR that the m17x pulls air in through the top of the notebook, which means the vents and keyboard area act as one giant air duct, also that you can put it on your lap wiothout restricting airflow... Sounds good but, none has done aproper review yet so i'm not entirely sold on that theory yet (",)

Certainly seems they took some design cue's from the 1730, as far as cooling etc.

LOL I would not put this Notebook on my lap. Dang thing is heavy. Yes Oodle-Bear is right the Vents are on the top. Which make the keyboard cooler. You can feel the air flow from the top Right hand side. The only part that feel slightly warm is the Center of the laptop.

I dont have the right port for my camra but if you go on Alienware support faq. Type in M17X check removing gpus and Keyboard. You will get some idea what it will look like. But the whole back of this laptop is one long Vent.

So let me get this right? Does the m17x suck air in at the bottom at all, or is it only cool air into the top then hot air out of the back?

I know the sub is on the bottom but aren't there vents there too?

    OB

BTW. I plan on getting one and an interested in the cooling as i plan to have the 2.8 and run it at 3.4 if possible lol

    It cannot do that.
Large diameter fans have large intakes, there is no room to allow the fans to suck in air.
Might be an extra, true, but the fans will have to draw air as regular fans, from the bottom.

If it borrowed cooling ideas from the 1730,that is actually a smart move. Darn thing is quiet and keeps the heat under control.
I hate the fact that on desktop mode, it allows the gpus to hit 75C before kicking it, but it was engineered like that, and mine never sees temps higher than 66-69C when playing Crysis.

I use a laptop cooler and it not as warm as a 15.4 inch Acer 1.66 ghz core duo.

To eleron911 Check http://4help.alienware.com/cgi-bin/alienware.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_scf_6=205& Type in M17X search by keyword How do I reseat or replace the Master Video Card of the Alienware Area-51 m17x mobile system?, How do I reseat the keyboard of the Alienware Area-51 m17x mobile system? and How do I reseat or replace the CPU Heat Sink of the Alienware Area-51 m17x mobile system?

Fact is there is No fans on the bottem of this laptop

Please if you can find a fan can you point it out to me On the lower right hand side is the two gpu geforce 8600, Center is the Ram and to the upper left is where the 2 hard drives are at. To the top center is sub wooffer. Where the spot where it says Alienware Corp M17X R1 is covered up by the cover and there no vent there.

I agree, it seems the GPU's use there own cooling fans which appear to be almost the same size as the actual card!!! they have an access port which would only work from above, fed from the vents on the top and through the keyboard... Wow, there's no venting from underneath at all from your pictures Atol...

The laptop cooler I have Nexus is heat pipping and I can pull it out it slightly warm. The top of the laptop is warm in the center. Where the alien head is. And that not very warm and from the back you can feel warm air. Not from one side but The whole back side.

If you pull the keyboard off you see 2 fans where the gpu are. What the FAQ from Alienware saying if you need to get to the cpu. You have to take the keyboard off then there 6 screws from the top to reach the cpu fan.

It's a pity you're not running 8800GTX's, then you could get a tru temp reading, i'm sure your readings are accurate and that the cooling system appears to be upside down to "normal" notebooks that cool from the bottom, but i will be getting a fully loaded m17x (assuming they a, ever release it and b, it's not too expensive) so the heat load will be higher... Wonder how it will cope?

I agree but I am glad I waited. I was told there will be a 9600 or 9800 that comming out for this setup. I did not have the money to get the 8800 and I did not want to deal with the M15X so I went for the M17X Knowing the cost of upgrading is cheaper.

lol true but i know that nvidia has release the mobile 9 series and im pretty sure they are testing it and its been a while since the 8800m gtx has been out but its still slowly trickling into laptops its going to be a while but i know the 9xxx series is going to be more popular because slowly the world is getting to know more and more about the gaming laptop/ desktop replacement and most people i talk to now want a laptop with dedicated graphics. When i bought my laptop for college 4 years ago the idea of having such a powerful laptop was unheard of without selling a lung and a kidney :p

Yes, I do have some benchmarks of my m17x and I have to say, I am not really impressed with the scores. Also, I am very disappointed that my m17x happened to have a defective CPU. So far, the m15x is staying but, I will continue my review of the m17x and it will hopefully be ready by the end of the week.

Edit: I did have the best Call of Duty 4 experience on the m17x though (this thing gets up to 180 frames)

The scores that I got when running the basic version of 3dmark06 are between 7991 (CPU not working scoring 1500 only) and 11400 (CPU working scoring 2300) and No, I wasn't in Stealth mode, Power Saver and Yes, I was connected to power. The weird thing is it takes too long to boot (45 secs - 70 secs) comparing to my m15x (12 to 15 secs MAX)
