I want mine to last a good 4 years and to play all games well that come out till then. I dont expect perfect frame rates on all games at native resolution but I'd like to know how future proof my setup would be. and aren't some parts upgradable?

it will run them just fine
Next time the owners lounge would be nice -
Oh right, still getting used to the hundreds of different official topics for the M17x lol..

Your system is very good. You will likely need to get a better processor later down the road. That's user upgradeable though so that won't be a problem for you. your graphics cards are top of the line so you likely be safe with them for a good while. Everything else looks good.
-
So "user upgradable" means it can be upgradable like any other laptop right? I've never took out a hard drive or gpu in a computer before
Not afraid too either, just wondering.
-
yes you can put in a new one just look at one of my guides

The_Moo has a guide for all your M17x needs.

2 years? Yup!
4 years? You gotta be kiddin' me
My GeForce 6800 Desktop blown Call of Duty 2 away. But I dont think it can handle Assassins Creed or stuff -
2 years is more realistic.
4 years is definitely stretching it!
But welcome to the world of cutting edge tech - you get the wear the crown for 6 months, then the new stuff comes out and you must either 1.) be happy with what you've got and stick to your plan of use (2 years, 4 years). 2.) sell it and buy the new hotness 3.) dont sell anything and just keep buying new models until you have a pile of hardware in the corner of your room that you dont quite know what to make of, and how it got so big, but your bank account definitely felt the impact, at least you got all the newest toys and your friends are jealous.
I usually go for option 3. -

. Sure, its not logical, but logic isn't everything.
Sure a 500 laptop or a 3000 car will do their job, but you know, life's to short thats what I've learned. If you want something, just go for it. -
Yesterday I've order a new M17x with Dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M Wide UXGA 1920x1200 P8600 2.4GHz CPU and a250 Gb Single hard drive some time in January I'll be getting an Intel X25-E Extreme 32 Gb SSD for the operating system and also I'll be replacing the CPU with the Quad Extreme Q9300 2.53Ghz . Now with all that I'll hope to be O.K. for the next 2 to 4 years! One thing I'm bit confused I read some were as far as the GPU that is got also a dedicated video card to save battery power, does this mean I got 3 video cards total? One more thing just saw on e-bay the
Q9300 2.53Ghz CPU for $219.99 U.S. I'm thinking to get it right now but it sounds to good to be true I'm not sure if I can post the link here but I would like some of you to see it and tell me what you think here it is:

Any comments will be appreciated Thanks -
Yes, it has 3 video cards total.
I tend to have a hand me down order to my old computers. I usually have 3 or 4 of my own, then start handing them down to my wife, cousens, kids, parents, brother, etc. They all get excited when I upgrade one of mine because they all end up with new (to them) computers. -
-
It's also... Not... A qx9300.....................!
-
Should I keep my order with the dual nvidia 260 M or go for the ATI CrossFireX – Dual 1GB ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4870
Thanks
In the next year or so how well will my M17x handle future games?
