    Hi all,

I just got my M17x yesterday, and just now I tried to play MW2 on 1600x1400 resolution (not maxed) and the GPU fan(s) is going crazy...it goes to full RPM in 1 second and stays that way until I quit the game.
Both fans seem to blow. (guess they are linked even if the 2nd 280 doesn't work in these new games yet)

I havent modded the Nvidia in any way, so it wont be using both 280's as it's a new game.

Can you tell if this is normal? The sound is just too loud in my opinion, I have to use headphones not to get distracted and even then I hear the fans through the headphones.

I had a M1730 before this machine and those fans where like half as loud on full RPM.

    Thanx,

    R

If you can hear fan noise thru your headphone then I believe it's not normal. For sure it will make pretty loud noise when the cards are fully loaded but in my case it's just wind sound and I can't hear it anymore if I put on my over-ear Shure SRH440 even with no sound coming from the headphone.
For better advice or diagnostic then somebody else may help.

Well I had a M1730 before and I think that the fans in the M17x are 2x as loud as the m1730 under load.

This is one of the things I don't really like about the m17x, however the video cards are about 10-15 degrees celcius cooler in the m17x, so that is good.

You can probably get sli to work in MW2 by setting the sli performance mode to force alternate frame rendering 2 in 3d settings in the nvidia control panel

My first M17x that I got (I had to return 2 before finally getting a 3rd that wasn't broken) had problems with one fan.

There is one fan for the CPU and then one fan for each GPU (so 2 if you are running SLI)

Check to see if you are overheating, one (or multiple) of your fans may not be working. I just can't remember what app I used to check these... it was something Freeware and I was able to check the temps on the hybrid CPU, SLI CPU's, GPU, and other internal thermometers all at once........... if I can remember I'll post back here.

I have the HWmonitor running, and temps are fine...40 degrees C... but its the noise that makes me crazy..as if there's only 2 positions...on/off, and nothing else... :p saves me having to vacuum the living room.

Yep, it's normal....even when boot up starts fans at full speeds...this is probably the new way of saving us from having to get our Cards replaced every 6months...260/280's are pretty much heat/power hoggers... I always play all my games at full res...crank CODMW2 up...and maxx all settings including voulme.. you'll get used to it and won't even notice it after a few hours...M1730's as a former owner my self...is pretty silent..even at full speeds sometimes you can't even tell if it's breathing hard...but..that's probably why our GPU died... also I don't know if there is any different in heat...due to the distance of the M17x card...are from Left to right of the entire system.... where as M1730's are 2x 1 special card...for 2GPU's in SLI mode..maybe this design is the cause of the M1730's failure rate...still miss that rig though!!! Nice machine hands down...!!! Long Live the REAL XPS gaming series!!!

The fans in my M17x were running at 100% when the GPU temps were not too high, like yours. I downloaded nHancer, found a profile to fit my game, forced SLI and AFR. Also, I am using the FPS limiter. Now, my fans run normally and don't make it sound like my laptop is about to take off into outer space. Since I made those changes, I've been monitoring temps with HWMonitor and NVIDIA System Monitor to make sure the cards are not getting too hot and so far they haven't.

My fans under idle with Boost Performance enabled sound very quiet. It sound crazy under heavy load but then again, only under heavy load. Otherwise their sound pretty much like MacBook. I really love the M17x for that. A monster that can be calm and can be very angry when it needs to :D Everytime I launch a game hearing the fans start running hard I have a feeling that the monster is waking up and its ready for everything :D
