    Hi,

my m15x just arrived yesterday and I must admit I am not very happy. First thing I did was installing Windows 7 but I don't actually know if this is the reason for the following problem.

When I am in stealth mode the fans seem to run at the maximum allowed speed. The notebook is almost never near to silent even if it's in complete idle. When I turn off the stealth mode the fan speed increases immediately. The air that comes out has about room temperature but the fans are spinning anyway. And the noise increases almost up to the maximum. Maybe it even is the maximum I can't really tell. When I listen to music over my headphones at a normal sound level I can still hear the air stream/fans.

So, is this likely to be due to problems of any software part with Windows 7 (drivers were all successfully installed) or is my m15x simply broken?
Anybody else with the same issues?

Any help appreciated, because if I can't get rid of that, sorry, frakking noise I will send this thing back and get a decent notebook from another manufacturer. (one where the casing doesn't sound like an 100 year old wooden stairway -.-)

    Thanks in advance,
    cc_zero :)

The chipset drivers from vista should be all you need. Are you sure its not the hard drive, sometimes the hard drive in laptops make a very noisey sound.

Getting the M15x was not very smart I'm sorry to say seeming as the new M15x is coming out fairly soon, and the current M15x is...well, rubbish. Especially as you can get far more for your money elsewhere now unlike the M17 and M17x.

But yea, on topic, download HWMonitor and post what your temps are. That may help to see the problem.

Hence I added the on-topic bit too, suggesting he shows us his temps. That's helping him isn't it?

Thanks for your help so far. And while you were trying to help, I was installing Vista. :D

So, now I have Vista Business on the machine, the same problems as before (after I installed the chipset drivers) and a screenshot from HWMonitor.

@EvilCorsair: I needed a decent machine asap so I couldn't really wait for a new m15x. Besides, I didn't even know there was a new one coming soon. :/

edit: Regarding the HWM screen shot. The values for HDD and CPU were fluctuating a little while the 80° were fix.

THRM is normally the chipset and 80c is very hot , you CPU temp is fine.

What were you doing when the photo of the temps were taken.

I surfed the web from time to time and chatted a little.
But I'm not really sure if the temperature is actually correct since it isn't changing at all. It was at 80° when I installed something, it's was 80° when I took the screenshot and it is at 80° now.
Maybe the sensor is damaged. That could at least be a reason for the constant cooling action.

edit: I installed the graphics driver by now, GPU temp in HWM is at 40°.

Hmm, those temps seem fine, there's no reason for your fans to be going fast. Perhaps it is that northbridge running at 80C...but I don't know what the M15x NB normally runs at.

Thanks a lot for your help guys, but this thing is going back. There appeared several errors due to the old Alienware drivers (couldn't get hold of any newer ones) and the fact that the Mobility 3870 HD seems to have a design flaw (might even concern a lot of the other ATI cards as well), so it is not applicable for my work after all.

Anyway, if anyone knows of a more silent 15,4" notebook with a high resolution display and decent graphics card I'll be all ears.^^
