Hey, I am new to vista and I just got myself an Alienware M17 laptop. I was wondering if anyone know how to customize the instant access media buttons on that keyboard as in how to change what program it opens and whatnot, as far as I know that I can change the programs that's currently set to. Thanks for the help in advance.

    yes there is

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=197011

    should work(nvm doesn't)

i left that link incase some one wants to mod that program for the m17 (ahem findvikas :p)

    Tips:
-Change the quick keys to launch more desirable apps like firefox instead of IE. Use regedit.
    "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\MobilePC\\HotStartButtons";
Once you are there, you can modify the programs to launch.

    Hi there,

I've followed this thread and reapplied the registry fix (AW site) but the instant buttons still don't work.
    What can be done?
    Please help!

    Thanks,
    Bharath

It used to work on my system (Vista Ultimate 32 bit) previous...
Don't know what happened. Just stopped suddenly. Machine was out for repair back to AW depot but the harddisk was with me. They've replaced the system.
Everything thing else works fine except the instant access buttons.

Checked registry, keys for hotstart buttons 1-5 are as expected.

    Any ideas anybody??

    Thanks

the registry keys are as expected.
the 32hotstart.zip from AW website did not resolve the issue.
I cannot use the instant access buttons at all.
One thing though, if I am in the Media centre, the FF and REW buttons work but when I touch any other buttons (even when in Media centre), they won't work.

    Thanks,
    Bharath

Make sure that the Touch Buttons are switched on (FN+F11 on The M9750 - may be different on the M17)

Thanks. I actually forgot about that one but no, it didn't work. If I turn it off completely, there is a constant blue light (dot) on. If fn buttons are on and when I press any of the instant buttons, I see the blue lighted dot appear and go but nothing happens.

Has anybody any ideas on this? I thought somebody would've faced the same issue and found a workaround.

    Thanks

I got this working. The panel was fine because I did mention previously that i was able to use the stop/start,FF & REW buttons within media centre.

For anyone who faces the same issue, you should run some registry fixing tool such as regmechanic or something similar which will find issues with your registry such as broken links etc..and fixes it.Then reboot the machine and the Instant media buttons would work.

I couldn't remember what I had done few days ago but the instant buttons started working again, I then remembered that I ran a s/w that fixes issues with Windows registry.

So even though the keys for the Media access buttons(hot start buttons) themeselves look fine within the registry, the whole registry should be scanned for 'other' issues.
    Good luck.
