I was playing Grid for about an hour and when I closed it I checked the video cards temperature and it said 91C... Is that normal?

a bit high, but not overtly so. i think i've hit 91°C as well a few times, not very often though.

hey Whizzo is it true that the RAM provided by Alienware is better then any Crucial RAM you buy? Also I have 4gb of ram, how much is actually used in windows 32bit?

AW provides RAM directly from the chip manufacturers (Hynix, Qimonda, et al.). companies like Crucial, Corsair, Patriot, Kingston etc simply take this RAM, slap on their logo and add 20$ to the price tag. so basically, it's exactly the same stuff.

as for the RAM usage with a 32bit OS, you're probably using between 3Gb and 3.25Gb of your RAM.

91C is not good, but its not horrible. I wouldnt leave it at 91C for a while though. I recommend a Notebook Cooler for it getting to that tempuature.

Ah, i think that's to be expected then in a 15" laptop with an 8800m GTX. I would however advise against overclocking and leaving the laptop somewhere crazy like say... on your lap

my m15x hit 94c. I was playing Team Fortress 2 with everything on high, 1920x1200, AA 16x. I saw my temp and it wigged me out. So i turned the AA down to 2x. now im at 86c. I down mind because i cant tell the difference between AA16x and AA2x while playing

Here's a little trick to reduce your temperatures when you play games at already rediculously high settings(16x AA etc.)...
    Ready?

    Enable VSYNC!
Yes capping your frames at 30\60 will stop your gpu from over-rendering frames and thus reduce your temps conciderably. You max have to tone down AA to say 8x, unthinkable i know , but it'll be worth it for another year out of your lappy :)

That's interesting. Does VSYNC really lowers your gpu temp? Someone try it.

well of course it does, in some games. imagine your GPU is hitting 92°C while pumping out 80 fps. since your screen can't show more than 60 fps, you might as well activate vsync (which caps your fps at the monitor's refresh rate, in this case, 60 fps). since your GPU doesn't have to work as hard now (cuz it only has to show 60fps instead of 80fps), the temps will go down to say 80°C.

Hi, I achieve a max gpu temperature of 86-87c on my m15x, but only with a laptop cooler. =\ I was wondering if there was any modification both official or unofficial that can bring down the temperatures. I have noticed that if I remove the bottom cover and play with the cover off, the temperatures drastically reduce to a maximum of 74c. The temperatures are reduced because once I uncover the thing it instantly gets cold air blown onto the gpu directly by my NZXT cooler. With the cover on, my cooler can only provide fresh air to the fan and slightly reduce bottom cover temperature. All the recorded temperatures happen when I run 3dmark06 at the default test settings. Is there a downside to running without the bottom cover? Are there maybe mods to cut holes in the cover to better vent/cool the gpu but retain the use of a bottom cover supporting device? Maybe alienware has a new redesigned cover that can allow better cooling or venting of the entire laptop in general?

its really not recommended you run the computer without a cover. I think it gets easier to short circuit that way and before you know it you will have a dead m15x before the heat kills it. I dont think anyone modded the bottom and i know AW will most likely not even going to update it. I am able to achieve a max of 88 and just stay there without using a cooler. Then just cycles because the fan kicks in at 80 something and once it goes back to 70 something it slows so the temps rise again.

Your best hope is to wait for one day AW will make a program that lets us control fan speeds. Thermo fan is suppose to be able to do it but AW hasnt released it yet >>.

Okay LOL good advice for me. I was sorta thinking that too. If not short circuit, I might hit the bottom on something adn damage the parts. Thankfully this hasnt happened yet =D

Also I have noticed that the GPU fan doesnt reach speeds higher than ~2600 rpms until temperatures higher than +80c. Is this normal?? I am using the x36 bios. My cpu fan runs fine.

yea thats normal for the fan to not act up until it hits somewhere near the mid or high 80s. Im still using x32 bios :D

I've hit 101+ with my m15x during intense cod4 gaming sessions..
I'm not so sure that it's a good thing.

OKAY you should seriously tone down the graphics, get some fans on that baby fast AND BUY a notebook cooler ASAP. 101c is roughly 213 degrees F

It is safe to say that that is not safe.

i dont think its normal for your gpu to be 100+. that is pretty much in the danger zone. If you had the m15x for a while its time you clean it out. I have never seen my m15x go higher than 88 yet :/.

download a program such as RivaTuner, Thermo Fan, HW Monitor, or Everest
