No. Alienware rapes you on the RAM. I paid 350 for the upgrade to 4 gigs (shoulda known better, I know), and I just bought Kingston's Hyper X ram with a latency of 4 from newegg for like 70 bucks.

My windows experience index for my ram went up by .1 and I notice visible performance improvements. Here's the link:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134660

    Good luck.

    bah - mishyperlinked - my bad.... :)

    try this one

    post 13...
mystic claims AW is better and not offered to the outside public in essence...
my bad about the wrong post.
aside from that, i would agree with the others here...get some from newegg or tigerdirect and install yourself.

    peace out....

my friend upgraded the RAM in his m9750 himself, it only cost him $87 i think from newegg.

btw, tigerdirect.com has a canadian site, i'm sure if you google it you'll find it, i'm too lazy to expend the effort for you.

So is it best for me to just remove the 1gb of AWs ram, and put in a 4gb ram, does it matter what the specs are on the 4gb of ram even tho the 1gb of AWs ram is 667 Mhz?

BTW, whats the best ram to get?
    Brand, specs?
    Thanks

they say certain brands of RAM will not work with AW - i have not seen a list, but from what i remember, no one has had conflicts with corsair, kingston, ocz, and a few other top favs from either tiger or newegg....
the lower the latency the better (faster) the RAM is.
you will have to do some research to find the lower numbers, but it will be worth it.

    memory
this is an example of if you look around...
same latency numbers...but you could buy 2 of these equaling your 4G and save around $10 - give or take a buck or two.... :)

dude, I'd give you more rep if I could... I feel as though a lot of the knowledge I spread around here I say over and over because either noone is listening, or noone goes to find the knowledge before asking again.

many thanks for reusing my knowledge.

    GOOD CALL!

4 and 5 are the fastest "CAS" latencies I've seen in this segment.

For reference, the 4GB kit from NetList that AW uses, is a 5-5-5-12, PC2-5400 (DDR2 667Mhz).

i call BS. you couldn't possibly notice the difference between CAS 4 and CAS 5 latency RAM in practical use.

I agree with you. lately RAM hasn't been the bottleneck. in fact with the DDR2 the latencies mean a lot less, they mean even less in DDR3.

the CPUs are even going at a reasonable speed and aren't often taxed very much (under typical use)... nVidia is right. computers are becoming a lot less taxing on the CPU and a lot more taxing on the GPU (even under normal use), and with the implimentation of CUDA, even more of the processing will be done by the GPU... very few, except real power-users are even going to need a reasonably fast computer.

lol - i never said one could or would notice the difference. just providing the standard answers that have been followed for some time regarding CAS latencies.
As time has gone on many things have become less taxing and more proficient in the role it plays in the whole sceme of things.
just as you would luv to get 60fps but all you get is 55fps...nothing the naked eye could decipher or would notice, but it helps when you want to compare statistics...no?

Here is some useful info about memory upgrades in Alienware notebooks:

    1) Without being able to set the RAM timings in the system BIOS you won't be able to take advantage of faster timings as they will run at the timings Alienware set. Though faster memory will work fine.

    2) If you get ram that is rated at timings that are higher then what Alienware set you run the problem of the memory not running at all or failing later due to being overclocked.
