We've all been wondering and asking for months. Is Montevina going to be in the m15x? I think with funding from Dell, Alienware might start to offer every generation of video cards and processors instead of skipping every other. Alienware reps said a few months ago that they had no plans for Montevina in the m15x. Because of all of the problems they've had with it, that might've changed. Since they've responded to the question once, if they don't again I'll take it that there will be Montevina (if there is, I'm sure that there'll be 9 series cards, too) in the m15x. After all, Alienware is about performance ;).

You can never be too sure but, yeah I would probably guess there would be a new model if they were to support Monteniva.

I'd also lean towards a No on this front... I doubt any major hardware changes will ever happen with the m15x...

    NO!

There is no need for a gaming laptop to upgrade from Santa Rosa to Montevina. Now what the m15x can stand for is a better cooling system. That should be the upgrade. Take a lesson from the m860tu.

Whizzo, I really don't know what you mean with that, but definately people in AW should learn from Clevo.

ONE fan cools GPU and CPU better than TWO in the m15x. FACT.

could be the 200 point quality inspection from AW, to many checks/ details so they forgot to test heat.

    1. Bling- check
    2. Cool Factor- check
    3...

which is why some (many? all?) m860tu users are complaining about excessive heat from the HDD?

Let's keep the discussion on-topic and useful.

I doubt Alienware will come out with a Montevina-based m15x-type notebook - if anything, as noted, it will be a new model. A platform refresh is a serious upgrade, and would justify the introduction of a new model. The m15x/m17x were already way late to the game as it is, coming out nearly a year after the platform debuted.
I don't know how long it takes to get a notebook to market from the design stage to the production stage, but unless Alienware started engineering a notebook for Montevina a while ago, I would think that it not be worth it for them to start now.

The performance difference between Montevina and Santa Rosa is . . . negligible at best. I have a Sager NP8660/M860TU with me right now (typing on it, actually), and it's faster than the m15x but not by more than a few percent (in gaming). It makes sense, since they have the same video card (8800M-GTX = 9800M-GT).

    I 100% agree.

there is no significant (or even marginal) performance difference going from Santa Rosa to Montevina.

in fact, I still do not think its significant comparing back from the Napa platform (first mobile Core Duo/Core 2 Duo generation) to the latest Montevina platform (third generation).

the performance [gaming] is mainly going to fall on the shoulders of the videocard.

    So the question should be:
"Will there be a videocard upgrade for [insert notebook]?"

very astute of you. and seeing how the 9800m-gt is basically the 8800m-gx, and the 9800m-gtx won't be offered in a 15.4" notebook anytime soon, nothing new is to be expected. until of course the 200-series come out.

The advantages of the 9800m GT over the 8800m GTX will barely be seen in the gaming department, perhaps a few frames here and there. However, in video and heavy 3d graphic and model work, the new features of the 9 series cards will definitely be a plus.

Also, I am currently using a m860tu, in general, there are no problems with the hard drive temperatures. As for the heat on the palm rest, my Toshiba P35 got hotter than this. It's just nit picking, as would happen with any system.

The real reason I'm asking is because if Alienware did do a Montevina upgrade I'm sure that they'll make some chassis revisions and add the 9-series. Though I do appreciate the speculation, I'm wondering if an Alienware rep can clear this up. They have said that there were no plans a few months back, but with all of the problems with the m15x, that might have changed. Since they've said it before, if they don't now, I'll just take it that the m15x is getting Montevina.

BTW, I really hope that the MBP gets a 256-bit card then I'll definitely get that.

the actual amount of heat it produce? yes; the amount of heat that transfer to palm rest? I don't think any laptop can beat it.

That's the only thing you seem to appreciate around these forums!

Didn't you announce new laptops being released by AW a couple of months back? Why are you asking the reps? You should know... You know of everything that is going to be released in the world...

I have to agree with milcs on this one MICHAELSD01. You seem to be listing to a website or Group of people who dont know there blank and there blank. (fill in the blank if you want).

Now if Alienware release a new gen. of laptops it will have a differnt name. Like last year model of 15.4 Inch was M5550. If it was a small change it would be like M15x2. If it was a small change.

I remember ages ago when this first came up with Monty's release, I PM'd Frank and was told "The m17x is not planned to have a motherboard chipset update this calendar year."

I would say that the m15x will never get Monty as it's a complete chassis/motherboard change which would make the m15x a hybrid really (",)

I'd wager that the next machines they release will have it but, not for the current m15x...

Funny talk about macs on forum about gaming laptops. Even if you dual boot windows on a mac the best GPU you can buy for a mac is an 8600 and for a lower price you can get an 9800 in the m860tu so unless all you plan to do is play three year old games I would stick with the PCs

Yea guys pretty much get a M5550 and try that out for size. The GPU on that thing heated up into the 95C's for me while I was gaming. My friend has the M5500 and his card hits 105C but he has to fix that laptop anyways. The heat on the M5550 was hot enough that I had to have paper towels nearby to wipe the sweat from my wrist :( when I played.

Oh btw his M5500 got so hot that his case has a crack in by the arrow keys. I have to help him call AW to fix it.
