    Is it just me or do Alienware need to update their currency conversion?

    I really want to buy the m17 as it's such a great machine.

    I made up the specs I want on the UK/Ireland site and it came to:

    €1,838.30

    I made up the EXACT same specs on the US site and the converted price came to:

    €1,479.53

    What the hell.

    Same for Australia and US; the prices aren't supposed to be comparable.

    Why not?

    Sure seems like they should be.

    Seems like they just didn't change them since the $US began to suck.

    Guess I'm going to have to get it sent somewhere in the US and then sent to me... Still work out cheaper I think.

    here's an example, one that is really bad for me..

    Dell australia vs Dell usa

    Mini 9
    699AUD vs 279USD
    699AUD -> 531 USD

    Mini 10
    849AUD vs 399USD
    849AUD -> 645USD

    Mini 12
    899AUD vs 399USD
    899AUD -> 684USD

    It's not a currency conversion, the companies in the two countries simply have their own prices for the products that they offer.

    M17 Australia vs M17 USA
    3473AUD vs 1399USD
    3473AUD -> 2642USD

    So Dell does this as well. What about other US based companies?

    I travel a lot and when I'm abroad the devaluation of the US dollar sucks. But it's sometimes a shell game the way exchange rates work.

    I just bought a Sony camera that cost me $300. When I was in Japan shortly afterwards, it would have cost me more than $500 for the exact same model and it's made there. Go figure.

    Same thing in Singapore, (places like Sim Lim Towers), where electronic goods used to be had for cheap years ago. Now I can get electronic products cheaper on Newegg.

    Pretty much all companies do this, and I'm surprised that people don't know this. Different things cost different amounts of money in different countries. That's a pretty simple fact of life.

    Just check how much video games cost, or how much movies cost. It'd be harder to find an item that has the same price in two different countries than it is to find an item with different prices.

    Here's the cost of an Xbox 360 Pro around the world:
    US $299.99
    GB £169.99 ($257 USD)
    €239.99 ($325 USD)
    JP ¥29,800 ($302 USD)
    AUD $399.00 ($307 USD)

    I'm not surprised people don't know this "fact of life" as you put it, unless they are someone who travels around the world and can see this first hand like myself.

    Unicorn is no excuse...

    I've only been outside of the country once, but you hear about this all the time, even around these forums (usually from Canadians complaining how everything is more expensive for them, or Aussie's about how games are $100 AUD a pop).

    And also the fact that cost-of-living around the world is different, I'm sure many people know that at least. From this, you can easily deduce that things cost different amounts of money in different countries.

    Man, you're being a bit harsh on those folks don't ya think?
    I mean from your opening statement "you can easily deduce" that you just called them ignorant. :wideeyed:

    Yes, I did. Imagine this: episode of jaywalking (for those unfamiliar with American TV, a comedian walks around town asking random people simple questions, which the person tends to miss to hysterical results - such as "who is the vice president") where Jay Leno (the host) asks "Do different things cost different amounts of money in different countries". How many people are going to say "No"? That's just unicorn!

    Alot of electronics seem to be cheaper in the us. and this is BEFORE and AFTER the economic downturn. I puke at the sight of prices and people having to turn to crap in other countries. SanDisk MS's are 50 to 75% cheaper in the us and why I have to deal with so many people in other countries complaining about the fakes they bought on ebay.

    @Lithus..... uh the XBOX 360 Arcade is 299 in the us, is the base model called "Pro" in other countries?

    EDIT - Nevermind hehe, nice to see the price drop i want lol.

    Ignorant would be correct because I never saw the price drop so i did not know. However fool is uncalled for.

    Damn i think Im gonna finally pick one up lol. I was asked to take over the iPrep tool so would be nice to have one to test my software against lol. I hang out in the sony hacking crowd usually this sorta stuff comes up in chat, someone would be flaming how cheap the 360 is.

    EDIT 400 for the The Xbox 360 Elite Game of the Year Bundle im so getting one lol, first thing i will probably be told is the drive isnt flashable thats sucks for dev'n iprep but i dont care as I personally buy my games..

    I was under the impression that rudeness was not tolerated in these forums.

    Calling other members ignorant seems rude to me!

    LMAO oh well.

    You also have to take in account for the difference in price of software such as the operating system, might not be sold to oem's at the same price world wide. Some hardware has to be sourced locally for a different price and comply with that regions regulations. Not every model is 100% the same in other regions.

    Thinkpad does the same job, and even worse.

    One will probably pay double for a Thinkpad in China as in USA. As a result, we have a very mature semi-underground market for US, Singapore and HK Thinkpad machines.

    Interesting, is that because of tariffs on IBM's entering China?

    You would think lenovo owning the brand and being a chinese company you wouldnt have that issue. How involved is IBM still?

    absolutely no. Thinkpad has been a pure chinese brand for years. And all TP machines are manufactured in China. It is just the way Lenovo wants it to be.

    IBM has nothing to do with thinkpad now. As far as I can remember, TP machines have been using the Lenovo/Thinkpad label in stead of IBM since late 2007.
