Does the m17x (all powerful) use this "device" at all? I'm not aware of anything infra-red related on the laptop. I'm trying to get a game to work which requires removing such a device, but I don't want any potential impact on the system's functions hehe. :p

If you plan on using a remote control with your system in the future, you will need this device active. It is for the IR Receiver embedded into the front of the system next to the left speaker.

Have you tried disabling the device in Device Manager as a work-around? Look under Human Interface Devices -----> ITECIR Infrared Receiver (EC)
and then disable that one. See if that works for you.

I've removed it and had no probs. But like BatBoy says, if you wish to use an IR remote control, you will need it.

But should be no trouble to add it back either....

lol did my laptop come with a remote??

Or is it in my express card slot which I haven't got around to exploring yet.

Batboy: I have tried to disable the "consumer IR device" but there's no option. Only to update/view details/uninstall. I'll look for "ITECIR Infrared Receiver (EC)" when I get home.

My chances of using a remote is.... incredibly low. But I ask this incase anything inside happened to be using infra red haha.

hehe some options do come with a remote, likewise some 3rd party hardware also have one.

Nah, nothing inside the system uses infrared. Like I said, I've disabled mine with nary a prob....

Yeh i won't be buying one. But I also didn't see an option for one either.

Ok I'll disable/try it out when I get home.

Some older printers etc used to allow you to connect and print via IR as well.

    Ahhhh, good old days.

Thinking about it, I got desperate once and used my phone via infra-red as a modem to quickly access a file online, cost me loads of money haha.

But nah both scenarios will never occur anymore.

This IR port is for the MS Media Center remote, useful if you are using it through your TV.
