my specs are in my sig of what I have ordered, I am upgrading the ram to 4gb(Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)) and the hard drive to 250gb (Western Digital Scorpio Black WD2500BEKT 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive), which i am purchasing from newegg.com
all i play is world of warcraft and a couple other basic games, and i am using this computer for school also
i will probably play WAR on it when it comes out
am i going to have any problems installing said items(ram/HDD) on the laptop? will it run fine? I know a few things about computers but not whether I am going to run into any problems or not
any opinions would be appreciated.
-
no, its an alienware...
if you are talking about the system in your sig then yea, it will play wow just fine. But i say, for customer service and a better ownership experience, you are better off getting something else.
if you get a good machine then more power to you, im just saying there have been a lot of bad experiences. -
You should be able to run WoW on medium-high settings (depending on what you're doing and where, of course).
To be fair, yes there have been lots of bad incidents on this forum but there have been good ones as well. Only few people ever post about a good experience because it's to be expected, no? So, you can't really judge them completely just based off the responses on this forum.
I'm not playing either side really. It's just potential customers should be told both sides of the story. Even the official Alienware forum doesn't attract every single customer. It's highly likely that most people would call CS directly, instead of coming to a place like this forum first. -
If you are happy with it, them you shouldn't ever do this question here.
Since here you will read:
1 - ancient platform (Napa i think), expect to have trouble using next gen software (games especially);
2 - too expensive.
Also, if you bought it before reading this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=272043 them you did a risky business.
PS: Don“t waste money doing 4GB on it, put only 2, since napa can only handle up to 2,5GB with Sli enabled gpus. -
1.66 is way too low for today's standard
-
dude cancel napa is ancient atleast get centrino lLOLZ

It has decent specifications, though it is older technology. Just about all current games will run at medium/medium-high settings and medium resolution (1280x800) on it. If you bought it to game, then it is going to do that just fine. The M9750 is very popular.
You could have done better for the money though . . . if you are in the US, take a look at the Gateway P7811FX. -
BEFORE you start upgrading tally up the cost of all of the parts and tell it to us (or PM it to be). Depending on this. Lets say the parts come to around $400, and lets say you want to add in another 8700GT ~$250? which iis $650 right there. Then lets say you want to upgrade your CPU to the 2.0Ghz which will be at least another $200 - $300.
If you do plan on going that route I would suggest selling your system on ebay and get maybe ~$1000 for it (I'm lowballing that one a lot just using it for reference) then with the $400 that you were going to spend in parts put that towards the new Gateway as chaz said because the gateway is $1350 and has a 2.1Ghz I believe and a 9800GTS which is a very fine card. I think I have the specs wrong but I know it is faster than your current M9750. Not telling you to go that route. Just an option.

(read specs they are pretty nice)
-
I canceled the order and i am getting the 2.0 processor that they offer and dual graphics cards/250 HDD/2g ram
gonna spend a bit more than what is on my alienware credit card -
cancel your order and get the OCZ whitebook.
http://www.darksmileysystems.com/criterion.htm -
Wait did you even read what I said? If you haven't ordered go for the gateway. I try to offer my opinions and people ignore them
-
I have read different test comparisons about the gateway and supposedly it sucks for lack of a better term.
im not ignoring you -
I will take a look at that ocz whitebook though
-
Honestly a lot of people actually like the gateway. The price ($1,250) is hard to beat and the stock M9750 will be a LOT slower than it so I don't see why the performance will be lacking. In terms of the 9800GTS, the card might be a tad slower than the 8700GT but then again you don't have to deal with an SLi headache (I did and its not fun). Cnet gave it their editors choice by the way and on bestbuy.com it has 4/5 stars from a bunch of different users.
RAM = DDR3 (better than the 1 you're getting with the M9750).
Processor = 2.26 (600mhz faster than the 1.6 and newer technology)
GPU = A LITTLE slower than SLi 8700GT's but faster than a single 8700GT
Screen = Comes standard with a 1920x1200 screen which is nice. AW is 1440x900
HD = Comes with a 200GB which beats out the 120GB obviously.
Size = The AW is thinner
Battery Life = I THINK the Gateway has a much better battery life as it is not running 2 GPUs and the technology is more efficient.

If I had a choice between the M9750 and the Gateway I would go with the gateway as it would give me another $800 to blow on something else like a smaller notebook that is portable like the Eee PC I have -
Well i am looking at a few different laptops but if i do get the alienware i am getting the dual graphics cards, 2.0 ghz processor, the 4gigs of ram and 250 HDD, plus the alienware has the blueray drive, and the gateway does not, but it IS a huge price difference. I have heard that gateway's customer service is terrible, any truth to that?
Also i dont think they have a repair/return policy if something goes wrong, but i will look further into it.
are there any other notebooks that compare to the gateway or the AW? -
There is also Clevo/Sager if you want to take a look at them. BTW the dual graphics isnt really a pro. you should really take Stone's advice into consideration.

ty
I have a week or so before i get my college refund, which im using to purchase my future laptop, so i'll continue to look up information on other laptops before i decide
edit:best buy does have some kind of repair policy, but i know geek squad is over priced, which i think is separate from warranty repairs? -
Yea Geek Squad is the pits they suck a ton (I've had to deal with them so many times and they dropped my desktop and tried to blame it on me).
Oh I should have suggested www.xoticpc.com (they have a 9.6 reseller rating which is AMAZING). Justin is very helpful. -
thanx for that website stone, i'm actually giving up on alienware and im looking at the asus from xoticpc I actually asked AW about the 32/64bit vista (because lots of things on here are heresay) and they still only use the 32-bit but they offer 4g of ram(lol) graphics card isnt that great, you guys are right
thanx for all the help -
Yea if you decide to go xoticpc.com and you want a very high performance system look at the 17" clevo which you can configure with the 8800GTX. Also, if you have the extra money go for the xoticpc warranty which apparently is great.
If you want go into the Sager/Clevo forums and PM justin or make a post there and ask about xoticpc and I'm almost 100% sure that everyone will recommend them. -
I can't believe all the stuff that comes with the xoticpc's! lol I've been reading lots about AW and they are extremely hit and miss, with more miss than hit if you know what i mean. and the ratingreviews page from xotic, AW has 94 pages and only 1/4 or them are positive, if that(while xotic has ONE "neither satisfied nor dissatisfied" lol). I have read so many horror stories about aw that i will never consider them again. I'm glad for anyone who got a good pc from them but i am not willing to take the $2-3,000 risk. I guess i just had to have it beat into my head because I REALLY wanted to be an AW customer that I was willing to give them a huge benefit of the doubt.
sorry if im rambling, but i feel like i've just had an apifany (sp?) lol
I havent even purchased from xotic yet, and I would highly reccomend them to anyone
I'm gonna get a sweet custom skin from them -

I can't seem to find the ratings page you're referring to. Would you happen to have a link?
Thanks! -
www.resellerratings.com is the most consulted page.
-
@Dis - I handled a Gateway today at bestbuy and it is pretty solid computer and I typed as fast as hell on it. If only xotic sold the gateway. You could get their warranty.
-
lol ya that would be nice to have a warranty like that for a computer at that price
and James, the website that Rex posted is the one im talking about. I'm sorry i'm not buying from you guys, but your vista is 32-bit instead of 64-bit and if i put 64-bit on the laptop, it would void my whole warrantyAnd you guys just dont have exactly what im looking for in a notebook
edit: AW on resellerrating.com has more than 1/4 positive feedback(i was mistaken), but it still doesnt hide the horror stories that I read on MANY of the pages.
Is my m9750 system descent?
