Lately I have been reading a lot about how the m15x technology is old, out of date, etc. And I was wondering If say for the next 4 years that I'm in college, will I still be good with my current setup (in my signature), for games and programming and etc. Right now I have no problem running every game but crysis on high settings but after reading all these threads I'm not so sure it will stay that way.

if games like GTAIV come out to require quad-core CPUs to run fine, then your system might struggle.
your system should be fine though, good CPU... good GPU... good amount RAM.
you should just hope that multi-threaded gaming wont take off.... but the games being developed now are definitely going to take advantage of everything your system will have to offer.... especially if you want high settings with high resolutions. -
You have to be realistic. Your machine is most definitely future proof but you can't expect to be running games at high settings three or four years from now. The top tech from 2005 will run current games fine but it won't be on max settings. You'll be fine.
There is a big push from Universities to graduate computer science majors who are well versed in multi-threading. If we start seeing games that are designed to run on 4 or 8 cores you might get into some trouble but I don't foresee that happening in the next four years simply because not enough people will have the hardware by that point.
There is no tech that isn't out of date as soon as you open the box. Keep that in mind. -

That's all definitely understandable. And if it comes to the point where my m15x is falling behind, I will definitely upgrade with new CPU, GPU, etc.

the reason i bought my m15x in feb of last year was b/c the 8800m gtx was the 'new generation' gfx card at the time... it was leaps and bounds more powerful than the previous nvidia cards.
my understanding is that currently, all high performance gfx cards (nvidia) like the 9800m gt are derivations of the 8800, rather than totally new platforms.
imho, buying at the bottom of the gfx card cycle is the best way to 'future proof' yourself if you are buying for gaming purposes. the new intel platforms (like montevina vs merom), RAM speed, FSB speed don't make a huge difference for gaming (esp if you play lots of fps games). -
in 3 or 4 years its better to just spend the money on a new laptop than upgrading one...not even my m17 will last 3-4 more years for gaming
-
mehhh halogod you may never know a qx9300 and 4870's will still be kicking some butt
and throw in some intel SSD's
ohh yea. but never know ....i jp i know were gonna get better games.
i just want to reassure myself lol -
i think every six months they develop faster and powerful parts of a computer so i guess it will not last that long..

I intend to upgrade in 3 years (or about 2 or so from now)
Is the m15x going to last?
