The m17x looks like the perfect machine. It's fast, it has a great screen, and it even has SLI. The only thing that I don't think will be good will be the size. 2.1" big seems pretty big, though a lot of laptops I've seen in stores are bigger. It seems a lot bigger than the .95" thick MacBook Pro, which isn't in the same class at all, though I'm considering both machines for different reasons.

Anyway, is the m17x too big to use on your lap? I've never had or even used a 17" laptop outside of a store so I wouldn't know. With the sale price, a 9800M GT m17x looks like a good value. I would get a m15x, but the screen on the m17x seems like it'll be more impressive, the m17x has much better build quality, and it isn't made of plastic.

Well, i have a 17" (see sig) on my lap all the time.

Its fine, not unconfortable. Yes, its more heavy than some 15", but you dont really notice it, its not like a brick on your lap! :p
Dont worry about it, the m17x is an awesome laptop and will work fine on your lap. :)

Well, it's big and heavy. It's a 17-inch. It is 2.1 inches thick at it's thickest point, but it does not look thick at all. It looks like it's "floating" when you put it on a desk. If you really want portability, I say go for the m15x.

Wow some people think all Notebook computers are Laptops. Wrong. Computer companys use Laptop computer when moble computer frist came out. Most companys use Notebook computers Now becuse of dangers of being burnt blocking heatsink fans. I would not use my M17X on my lap. It block airflow and it get warm. The laptop is heavy. If it was cold out and no heat Ya It would be on my lap.

Not good to use on laps because it would disrupt airflow. It is big but i like it better than the M15X i had previously. Good build quality and performance.

I've had two 17" laptops now. I can safely say that unless you're a small child with a very small lap, you will undoubtedly be fine. Any average-sized adult will have no problems. No modern laptop should be set directly on your lap anyhow, performance spec or not. I use a large child's picture book.

You can position it where the fans/vents arent blocked...

Putting your foot on the other knee will lift it up a little and usually not blck/give airflow to the fans/vents

You could also get a cooler, put that on your lap directly, nd put the m17x on top of that. I recommend the NZXT Cryo LX.

I got an iRain Aluminum Stand for my Asus W3j a few years back --- looking to buy a new rig now (and the 2 17" Alienwares are in the mix) - the iRain thing (if they're still available - haven't looked in a while) has a pretty simple design but it's nice and does the job (letting me keep the laptop on my lap).

I'm so torn between the G70's Asus models, Alienware 17" models, XPS 1730 and I"m even considering the Macbook Pro (though 15") but I'm not quite sure why.
