You can phone customer care and ask them to give you prices on the warranty extensions. If there is a discount when you purchase a new system (if your still within the return period) you may qualify. Otherwise you can add up to 4 years of additional service at whatever the going rate is. (somewhere around 600$ CDN so work out your conversion on that one if it applies).

I've been told as long as your original warranty has not expired, you can upgrade anytime.

you can extend the warranty even after it has expired in some cases (i did this with an XPS M1330).

There might be some limitations and they won't extend the warranty if you have issues with the laptop. (so extend first then complain about issues)

I was thinking of saving up for a 3 year warranty to go on top of the standard one and Im glad to hear its possible, but not happy about the price.

I have found in general dell is asking more for warranties.

Also in Canada dell will extend an existing warranty, but will not Upgrade it. (IE cannot add Complete care if you did not buy it originally)

I got quoted a full price for trying to upgrade from 3 year basic to 3 year advanced (full price meaning same as if I were to pick 3 year advanced when buying the comp)

Well then I guess Ill stick with the standard warranty. I didnt get a warranty on my dell and its lasted 2.5 years and the only thing failing is the GPU. Now with the ati in my alienware I dont think Ill have that problem. Plus anytime I have had an issue with a laptop it has been within the first year and thats when Im covered. Ill reconsider around month 9-10 of ownership.

I just called and was quoted $296.00 for a 1 year NBD warranty, they wouldn't let me add complete care on to the extra year even though I have complete care now.

I've found that in the past, the answers you get vary depending on who you speak with. Try again and you may be told something else. If not, challenge what they're telling you. If they say you can't extend your warranty at the current level - ask them to see the policy where it says they can't / won't.

On the other hand - if it's becoming a widespread change to the way Dell extends the warranty period, then perhaps they may have recognised some of the abuse during the warranty period with users complaining about their perfectly functioning systems so it can be sent back and upgraded to the latest release at little/no cost.
