I am currently unable to play blu-ray disks on my new m17x.
My problems started when I mistakenly uninstalled PowerDVD thinking that I could use VLC to play blu-ray films because the hardware did the decoding.... Wrong!
I then discovered that I needed PowerDVD because it was the sodftware that allows the playing of blu-ray discs... crazy eh?
I did not panic though as I had the support DVD so i re-installed PowerDVD again... only to find that the version shipped with my m17x, which has a blu-ray reader installed, is only for DVD's... It does not support Blu-Ray at all...
I was now annoyed with myself for uninstalling the program and then to find that the so called support DVD does not "support" my m17x... Well, some 4-letter words were used I can tell you (",)
Once I had calmed down, I contacted the very helpful CS and explained that the support DVD did not contain the blu-ray version of PowerDVD and I was told that I would be shipped the correct version and also that this was not the first time wrong support DVD was issued...
Pleased I waited for the email which arrived on the 16th September. It told me that my order had been shipped, so I had 5 - 10 days to wait.... Or, so I thought?
So far I have had no DVD in the post (mail) so I rang the CS people this morning (29th September) to ask what was happening.
I have now been told that my order wasn't sent out (despite what the email said) and that it would be looked into...
James/Armando is there any reason why a simple disc should take so long to be arranged...
I'll admit it was my fault for removing the program but, I expect the support DVD to have everything my m17x has installed actually on it.
I am writing this in the hope that this does not happen to anyone else.
Whilst I am patient (sort of (",) I would like to try a blu-ray disk on my 1920x1200 screen, sometime soon....?
Thanks
OB

Hi OB i bet you feel a right plonker now
go and have a mug of tea, that will calm you down.
just an idea but would the blu ray thingy not be on your back up on your hard drive, i think its f10 on startup. this is only a guess but if it helps while you wait for the disc then all the better. -
Surely it would be easier + quicker to directly PM the Alienware Guys?
-
I am assuming this is not available through HIVE?

I'm sorry to read about the poor experience, OB. Please re-send your account details to my PM and I'll look this up for you right away.

Yeah I tried that but, there's something on our server that stops it working.... grr argh!
Yup, wish i'd never removed it now but... I was going for the remove unecessary software option and removed it in favour of VLC, removing all runing applications that used lots of resources and VLC is lighter so... Ho Hum
I thought of the F10 option but it warns you that all data will be lost so.... not such a good idea lol
Nope it's not in the Hive...I've searched everywhere and even the PowerDVD site, does not seem to recognise the existance of the 7.3 BD version...
Thanks James for your quick response, PM on it's way

P.S. I also thought that should anyone else get the blu-ray reader and thinks of deleting PowerDVD, check you've got the correct software beforehand (",) -
Can't you just roll back your Vista to before you uninstalled Power DVd?

Eh, thanks for the "advice" there, Satan.....
aja58, No because i've installed too much since then (",)
For the record there is no problem with my m17x, it's a great machine. I have a software glitch that's all.
