here is how and what to use to overclock
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=325944
but you need zfactors's .28 bios on it. -
Zfactors bios will let you OC in bios as the q9200 multipliers are unlocked
-
ok nice,
thank you guys.
it should be in a few days i would guess.
ne quick links for installation too? -
I never got around to makign a CPU guide
open the bottom service panel open the Heat sink on the right and under it you will see your cPU.... turn the knotch and pop it out then put in the new one lock it in and then put thermal paste and then put the heat sink back on ( clean off the heat sink to ) -
yah that sounds simple enough.
i just need to learn how to properly apply paste.
i would hate to screw it up. -

Cool completely understand now! Just remeber ICD 7, MX-2 or OC freeze are favorites
, and only a glob the size of a grain of rice right across the middle of the die for even spreading! Good Luck man

as long as your happy with it.
-
its a great laptop.
no problems, ever... -
I feel the same about mine.
I have a thread here somewhere with some of the results from switchin to a Q9200 -
Thanks, I was posting right before getting ready for work, didn't have time to search real quick.

Moo, when you say overclocking in the BIOS using zFactors .28 BIOS you just mean adjusting the multiplier right? No other controls?
-
That's how I do it. I'm not a fan of FSB switching as it stresses all your components as opposed to just the CPU. For me it's always been more unstable. I know others have gotten theirs to be stable with the FSB overclocking, but I've NEVER had good luck with it since my original days of overclocking (AMD K6-2's....to 350mhz hence the Ovrclck350).

ok guys i downloaded zfactors .28 bios and made a dos bootable disc,
but when i restart and get to the Zfactor .28 main screen i dont know what to do next.
it says hit B to start flash, so i do but nothing happens.
any help would be appreciated -
-
correct the m17 for some reason REALLY doesnt like to be flashed via a disc.. the usb works perfect though
-
When you boot up, I'm assuming it runs the autoexec.bat as it's telling you to press B.
My problem was my disc wasn't seeing the rest of the files needed.
Are you then at a c:\ or a:\ prompt?
If so, type in dir *.bat
Make sure that b.bat is listed.
Then type in dir *.exe
make sure that phlash16.exe is listed.
Finally type in *.rom
Make sure W840_028.rom is listed.
If one of those 3 is missing post up. -
Hi guys,
A bit late now and probably unnecessary for you guys with all your tech knowledge but here is a good guide worth bookmarking for noobs wanting info on how to install CPUs and RAM, HDs in the M17;
http://www.ocztechnology.com/manuals/DIY_17_Intel.pdf -
Hey thanks tonytoff, that's actually a pretty good guide.
-
ok i will run thru those instructions and then tell you what happens -
if you make the stick bootable first and then copy the extracted files from the bios to the bootable stick it should work fine.
-
i read something about a KBC file.
i nvr got that.
do i need it?
all i got was .28 from rapidshare -
its in there... lol its all in there... you will see when you flash it it give you the option to install the kbc during the flash if you follow my on screen prompts
-
-
ha ok guys i got it to work.
ha all i did wrong was extract .28 into my own folder i created called
"bios" on the usb stick. and it wasnt necessary...
it worked when i just copied it straight to the drive -

update:
just installed my q9200 in M17.
works great now. ive noticed a good improve in games.
does anybody know a good temp it should run at in idle/intense gaming.
would ne1 want to run any FRAP benchmarks etc? -
also, its clocked at 2.93ghz right now, fyi.
does nebody know how to get it higher and still stable? -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
unfortunately the circumstance for that Quad is it was never actually released so not many people have that quad... it may be slim pickings... you are probably going to have to do the work
-
I just run mine at 2.93
-
Ive got a Q9200 QAVS coming for my M17x(thats coming to lol) ill report here just to let ya know when i get it and what kind of OC i get out of it .
-
-
i just found out that my q9200 will
only safely go to 2.93ghz in the bios.
otherwise, i get a bsod -
Some CPUs are just like that when overclocking and usually not much you can do about unless you throw some more Voltage at it .
Ive seen people with Qx9300s in M17s that are stuck at 3.06 or possibly less so its always a hit or miss . -
it seems that mostly everyone in the forums
clock theirs at 2.93 as well... -
I bought the Q9200 for 2 reasons
1.Price of the Qx9300s is stupid expensive now even on the ES CPUs and not worth that price IMHO.
2. The M17x seems happiest at 2.93ghz for now, so i can save some cash and get the same exact performance as the Qx9300.
Now i just have to hope it works properly in the M17x but im almost certain its going to . -
Very nice. Hey guys what are you using for overclocking?
-
Megacharge Custom User Title
I was also looking for a Q9200, but I don't see any more on ebay.
-
I know they suddenly disappeared . I imagine like all the CPUs on there give it a day or week and they will be back , seems ES CPUs are getting snatched up fast especially anything Quadcore.
-
you overclock by adjusting the multiplier in the bios. -
Ok cool, I tried it and that worked great. I tried using the SetFSB but I couldn't get it right.
-
it doesnt help that intel stated they were going to start cracking down on thees sales...
