Just bought 500gig HD should i install it? will it destroy my warranty? Alienware Australia is already trying to void my warranty for updating to the X32RC1 bios they sent me.

It won't "destroy" the warranty if you restrain yourself to memory and HDD.

BUT... are you sure you want to install a 500GB on your M15x? It's slower and it's going to slow load speeds and etc. Specially if you are gaming... which I know you are not, but well... Think about it. Oh, and also make sure it's a laptop HDD, not a desktop one! :D

OK thanks Milc I am just scared of Aussie ALienware Customer Support.

Lol i didn't make same mistake 2x. It happened to me once and once only when i bought the wrong HDD for my Laptop.

BTW i didnt know 500gig would slow me down :( I suppose it makes sense now because the seek time would be longer due to more datas ...

is it not true the bigger harddrives have faster acess speeds.. for example a 500gib 5400rpm drive is faster than a 200gib 5400rpm drive..

im also interested in harddrives as for australians its ALOT ALOT ALOT more cheaper to order with the cheapest HDD / Ram and upgrade... could save u 500+

i know there is a 320 7200rpm drive out atm... thats what im trying to hunt down.

yes its truw larger drives have better search times. for instance the 320 5400rpm measures about the same as the 200gb 7200rpm because of the extra spindles

    lawl every ones from Austin

i shall be Austin Alienware 2 soon ^_^

dude 500 5400RPM is the best speed for size u can get... u can only get 320 at 7200RPM now i think..

dw 500 5400RPM will still be great! ill prob do the same now come to think of it..
loading times shouldnt really be a issue with alot of memory any way right?

and like some one say 500 5400RPM is prob about the same as a 200 7200RPM drive in actual load times right?

Now i have to take it back.

The one in my alienware now is a slide on type but the hard drive i got is a stick it in drive. :(

do you see the gold pins at the back of the drive? it's different to the one i got inside my alienware and id ont know what you would call this kind of hard drive pin connection that is in my alienware.

Hmmm... Weird. But try and see if the HDD on your M15x has an adaptor to connect to your laptop. THis is quite a common thing.

You know i really wish people would read the alienware documents on this before coming here whining that it doesnt fit. Check here
Very clearly says "Remove the SATA Adapter from the hard drive" and then on the section for installing the new one "Connect the SATA adapter to the hard drive"

some people are not totally savy or technically minded with what comes inside of their computer. so this is the place to ask questions.
thanks simon for posting the link for LadyApril. and to be honest i would have asked the same question as ive never seen that link before.

The only bad thing about Austin is they opened up my new Alienware and played with it - they installed their games on it and played with it. THey left my laptop out on their counter display - their customers touched my new Alienware laptop. There were so many greazer finger prints and hand mark all over my new laptop. But i got a good deal out of them i saved over $300 by buying there.

Austin is about making profit so they will try to make money out of you.

Having said all that i am getting mixed feelings about them.

They are building me a new desktop that will be faster than alienware area 51 alx - i know i will get a good deal and it will be $5000 cheaper than buying from Alienware. My new desktop will also be much better and faster.

I ordered these same specs from Alienware but cancelled the order due to bad customer service and poor quality control as well as their inferior quality parts i have decided to go to Austin and get them to build me a fast gaming pc with all the specs saving over $5000.

Here are the specs for my new desktop but i wont be able to pick it up till 5 weeks due to monetary constraints:

i recommend dealing with Allan Tan to bypass all the BS from their sales people trying to sell you old stocks.

I ordered my m15x and got it 5 days after. btw i am the only person in WA (they told me in australia) that ordred the m15x - that's the reason why i got it fast.

Alienware is not a affordable to a lot of people and most poeple wouldnt buy it just to play games although there are a few exceptions.

that was a bit of a horror story that your dad told about the tossers at
    Austin ripoff.
i cant believe they charged $99 to set up your system and in the process play games on it as well.

ohh your tyrones relative i see. Austins fine u just have to do your research ive used them for years (but i build all my own desktops etc)
and yes getting a branded or packaged desktop is very sily.. its unfortunate notebooks dont have the same level of DIY.... :( im sure u could save thousands and thousands. Some day soon new notebook standards will happen i guess. I guess notebooks are more of a fashion item but... so brand is more important..

ive never owned a PC i have not built my self... and im sure thats the same for most high end gamers. Now im thinking of spending 3800 or so on a laptop... go figure lawl.. i guess ive earned it via all the money ive saved.

btw you type well for a 8 year old. (im prob wrong but just thought i would say it ^_^)

omfg grrrr the idiots from Alienware that put the screws in the hard drive cage has rounded all the screws we cant undo it. They are not only rounded but they were put in so hard it cant be undone with phillips head screw driver anymore we have to go to Austin to get it unscrewed.

There aint no way these screws were put in by Professional Alienware Assembly Line.

Just look at the state of these screws how do they expect us to unscrew it when the screws are all rounded?

This must be their insurance policy where they will garranty you have to send it back to upgrade a hard drive ??? Monopoly on making money?

    @ LadyApril

i looked at your desktop bill. are those prices in USD? if they are you got ripped off for a lot of the parts.

    9800 GX2 - $470 USD
    4 Gig DDR3 240 Pin 1600 Ram - $350
    QX9770 - $1,470
    Velociratpor drives - $300 each
    Your PSU - $300

didnt feel like looking at the prices for the rest but you can see you wasted a couple hundred dollars on the parts already.

bummer about those screws. If I were you, I'd drill them out and replace them with new ones.

I've done this procedure on an m15x. I cloned the main drive onto a new SATA drive and then physically swapped them so that the larger, newer SATA drive was the main drive. Worked perfect.

You'll find the SATA adapter you need on the back of your old drive!! It's just a connector-adapter that fits the plug on the motherboard. It just pops off the back of the SATA connection.

in terms of speed 500/5400 = 320/7200 so no worries there.
As long as it's 9mm and 2.5inches, it will fit.
We are talking about the Samsung, right?

Ok thanks for that tip i will get someone to drill it out for me as i dont have tools here :(

Aussie prices :) It still better than buying Alienware at least i will get real quality parts and 8 gig of ram as well. And i know Austin computers wont wriggle their way out of fixing my warranty too. The more i look into ALienware as a company the more i will never buy from them.

I cant believe the state the screws are in cant believe it. This is so not good what kind of quality control is this? Anyway i will drill it out as adviced by you and put new screws in.

BTW the number 1 screw was missing aswell. Number 4 screw was the only 1 in good shape, 2 and 3 were abosulutely buggered we just cant even unscrew them out :(

THere were scratches every where on the Sata Hard disk cage it loooked secondhand.

You should have gone with the eVga motherboard that has tri-SLi on it, because 3 9800 GTX's are not only faster, but are also cheaper.

The hard drive works like this: The smaller pin (in the middle) connects to the motherboard via a red (normally) cable, and the long pin connects to the power supply with the thin black (normally) connector.

Don't think that was answered, so there you go.

I'm merely informing him of his choice. The eVga mobo is about the same price, and the 3 cards will be cheaper.

Sure, SLi doesn't work perfectly, but it's still better than just 1 card.
