Just ordered the laptop, just hung up with alienware and they just verified my credit card and its all done. it´s just the waiting now.

I have a question, I ordered it with 4gb of ram because maybe I will like to install 64 vista on it. I have the disc. The thing is this. I was reading the guide in the thread around here and apparently you can get everything working, command center and everything, except for the light controls, which is very important to me so I was thinking, maybe a dual boot? use 32 for almost everything but when I want to do call of duty 4 or whatever, I boot to the 64 bit system. I wont mind no having command center or custom lights or anything then, since Im gona use it only for gaming.

My problem here is that my machine comes with a solid state drive and those are small. Do you recomend me doing that? or just leaving the 32bit installation and forget 64 bit?

Having 64 bit only is not an option for me as I want everything to work perfectly, lights and everything.

If you do recomend the dual boot. how much space do you recomend I give to each partition?

    thanks

Its not worth to get all technical bout how much space u need bout minimum space requirement etc. If it was me, I would just split it 50/50 :) If one Windows crashes, u can still boot with the other one and still save your data too.

Oh and boypogi, just try and answer the man's question. If its new ram its under warranty anyways, so good deal kuhne.

    Cheers

Yeah and I am not in the USA so geting the extra ram from other stores internationaly will probably end up being as expensive if not more than just ordering with the alienware ram. even if its lower quality.

thanks MAN, I guess thats what Im gona do, 50/50. Im probably going to install Leopard in it too, heres a guide out there to do it and apparently its easy enough. I dont need leopard nor like it very much but I just wana mess around with it.

Would you recomend instaling all the OS I want in the same solid state drive? or only the main OS I will use in he solid state and the other OS in the swapable HD in the smart bay?

It should work Kuhne I see many laps on Ebay with both OS also interstingly I here the Mac runs Vista better than PC. go figure that.
I would install seperately if just to tinker first..if something go wrong your whole sys wont be compromised. All depends how familiar you are with both os..better safe than sorry. just my opinion.

Oh I was very curious to any experts out ther.. when where and who were the first of these m15x Laptops actually assembled ? Its not anywhere on the case..was it like march 2007?. I saw a Bios screenshot on Ebay saying 3/2007 quanta..whatever that means.
I know the laptops were announced in 11-19 2007 at cebit , and word of mouth in October 2007. so production had to be in already swing before that.
I am doing research project and needed to know.

    Cheers!

I think what boypogi wants to say is that ordering RAM direct from AW is a bad decision. They overcharge for 4gbs of RAM. If you can change that part of your order, and just order 4 gigs of RAM elsewhere, it would save you a few hundred dollars. You don't have to order a specific AW RAM, any ddr2 667 mhz ram would do

Don't worry about changing RAM on your own. It's really easy. The Alienware support site has step by step instructions on how to do it. You can even check out Youtube, one of our forum members posted a how to video there :)

Finally, changing both the RAM and the Hard Drive does not void your warranty. It would save you a lot of money to order the bare minimum, and change it yourself. As for the Smart Bay hard drive, you can call up CS and order only the Smart Bay cage, put in whatever hard drive you want from then on :)

Heres the thing. If I do install the other OS in the hard drive that goes into the hot swapable bays. Shouldnt i play all my videogames from the OS that is installed in the solid state drive? and install all the games in that drive as well? My guess is I would get some performance boost?

    Only when loading games.

And btw, with 64bit you can still control custom lights etc. And anyway lights are turned on from boot :)

I think findvikas made a guide on how to do this, since he made a guide for the 64-bit version of Vista for the m15x.

About the lights being on from boot... Does that mean they will be on when running Ubuntu also..?

I'm sure it would because mine turns on as soon as my computer is on. The only thing you wouldn't be able to do under Ubuntu is to change the lights.

I read that guide about installing vista64 on the m15x, its a pretty nice guide but I think I remember reading that changing the color of the lights inside windows with the alienware software didnt work.

is this true? or does that guide basicaly leaves your machine exactly the way it came from the factory but with the 64 OS instead of the 32?

thanks for the replies and your help guys

Yes, it turns on when you run Ubuntu. The downside is that you can't change the color or turn it off.

I think I remember reeading in that thread with the vista 64 guide, that one guy was asking of the lights worked and the person who made the guide answered that they didnt. that you pick a color and do th einstalation and thats the color its gona stay with.

Was the guide updated after that?

You can't change the color within Ubuntu. You will have to boot up in Vista and change it using the Command Center app.
