    Intel Core i7 620M 2.66 GHz (3.33GHz Turbo Mode, 4MB Cache)
    4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz
    Alienware M17x 240W A/C Adapter
    17-inch WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 RGB LED (1200p)
Dual 1GB ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4870 in CrossfireX
    500GB 7,200RPM SATA-II HDD

    I was on a budget of 2500$.

    Okay, first off. Hi everyone!
I am new to these forums and was reading a bit but I'm not sure if I made a mistake with my purchase.

Will the i7 perform decently running most games? or will I see problems?

It comes with Windows 7 home premium, I plan on installing win7 ultimate 64bit as soon as the laptop comes.

Estimated delivery date is 5/24/2010 :(
is that normal? Seems like an awful long time.

This is my desktop replacement, my current specs are:

    AMD 3200+ X2
    2.5gb DDR PC3200
    ATI RADEON HD4750

I am assuming I will notice a huge performance boost when playing most games. I'm pretty sure my current CPU is a huge bottleneck when it comes to games.

May I have your thoughts? Should I have upgraded the i7 on the alienware or was choosing the dual 4870's a smart move?

You should've waited for the 5870x2, by right, it should be available in less than 10 days. Best advice for you is to cancel your order now and wait.

I can't really cancel now, I purchased it through work - As long as it will run Global agenda / League of Legends / SWTOR and Unreal 3 Engine decently. I won't really care.

The 4870's should be fine and a huge upgrade from my single 4750 and horrid 3800+X2 AMD cpu.

dual 4870 with your new graphic card would definitely have a rather impressive improvement.

But i gotta agree with fzhfzh here, seems worth the wait for 5870.

    i7 620m / xfire 4870's won't be bad for running Modern warfare 2?

it'll run it fine. they're just saying that with the dual 5870 option only about a week away, it would have been worth the wait. 4870s will be good, but 5870s in CF will be awesome.

If you are willing to wait, then do so. If not, then don't...I mean it's that simple. Either way you've got a dang solid machine there...just be advised a lot of people on this board are very much into getting the latest and greatest and exchange their machines at super fast intervals.

TO BE CLEAR, I'm not saying that it's a BAD thing...I'm just saying that some of us can keep up with that, and some of us can't (or choose not to). :)

The new graphics cards are going to be an improvement on the old ones but I'd imagine they're also going to be a bit more expensive too (though I'm not really up to date on the pricing so I'm not 100% sure of this).

Thanks for the feedback guys, had me worried. Thought I just got screwed haha.

I don't care about the best of the best, (I dont have that type of money) but I do care about running certain games decently.

As long as this will run the games I want.. decently. Thats all I really care for it to do.

If you don't mind my asking, roughly what score do you get with a good run using 3dmark06 on that set up?

To the OP: that is a fine setup, you will be very pleased!

Nothing will stop you from, keeping an eye open and if is true the new Ati come out on the 5th of may, just call dell and tell them you want to cancel your order and get the new system with the new cards ;)

If lucky the price be the same

Ps congrats for a first laptop you made a great choice.

I'd definetely wait for 5870 crossfire. You'll be seeing 20-30% higher performance, and the cost should be only a little higher than 4870s.

Then again, the 4870 crossfire will play any game you throw at it just fine, even at 1920x1200. It's just you could have had that extra performance for not much more at all.

First of all, congrats on your new dream machine! It's an awesome system and you're gonna love it, no doubt. I don't think that the machine would have been within your budget if you include a dual 5870 set-up, so don't sweat it. You have got a fantastic machine (coming) that will blow you away! Just enjoy it, man!
