    I have a Dell XPS M1730 WOW edition decked out like this;

    Core 2 Extreme X7900 @ 2.8 Ghz
    4 gig ram
    400 GHD
    2 Nvidia 9800m in SLI
    1900 x 1200

I have a opportunity to get this M17X decked out like this for 1899.00 US
    Quad Core Q9000
    4 Gig Ram
    320 GHD
    GTX 260M
    1440 x 900 screen
    Reg Dvd burner

Should I upgrade or is it not worth it??

The 8800s for the M1730 were famous for burning out, but I'm not sure about the 9800s...

In terms of upgrading it really isn't worth it. Especially if it only has a single 260M on the M17x, it'd actually be significantly worse than the M1730.

Spending 1900$ to get an crappier laptop is not worth it.

    It's a downgrade.

What would be a good reasonable upgrade to the M1730 staying with in a 2400 budget? Most everything Ive seen would be like you said a lateral move.....
    Thanks in advance

Get the $1899 special and upgrade to the 4870 crossfire. This will also come with the upgrade LCD at $2600. Then buy it through EPP for 10% off and it will be just under $2400 before tax.

Still not worth it!!! M1730 isn't that slower than the M17x... keep the $1800.00 and buy some SSD's raid 0 config and 8 gig of ram...also if you want to get the X9000 due to better heat/performance over the x7900. Especially the WOW edition is a rare find...over 4K new Ouch!!!

More the reason to sell it and get a more powerful system with better upgrade ability. Someone will overpay for the WoW edition system.

Also the system would be noticeably faster in gaming. Not only will it run cooler because the GPUs don't sit on top of each other but they are also proprietary. Then you take in the fact that your going from the Penryn based proc to a Montevina proc and DDR2 memory to DDR3 memory.

Assuming you get a good price for your system I would do the upgrade.

My advice would be use the $2400 to buy some stock and wait 12 months for your M1730 to be out of date, then you will be able to buy something way faster than M17x and your M1730.

Your M1730 is fast enough for 12 more months for sure.

8700's change everything. They're turds. Sell the WoW M1730 for as much as you can get, and buy the other laptop. Even upgrading to an X9000 is gonna cost almost $400. I don't even know what that will do for you performance-wise. There's a WoW edition on Ebay, with basically your same setup, for $1250 Buy It Now.

Check completed items on E-bay as well and see what they went for. Might give you an idea
