Okay, after noticing a lack of a search function. I figured I might as well ask.
I've had my Area51m 7700 since 2004, and she's still going strong since I got all the bells and whistles back when I ordered it. Other than a motherboard issue that was resolved. My general opinion of Alienware has been a positive one.
Well...my old girl is starting to show her age. A line has developed on the screen running from the top to the bottom, and is magenta in color. Now if I hook her up to an external monitor the line is no where to be seen. And the PC still plays my games strongly.
So I was wondering if anybody had a ballpark figure it would run me to ship it back and have a new screen put on old girl here. Being a firefighter makes carrying around a separate monitor impossible.
And yes, I currently can not afford a new Machine. A wife and 2 kids do that to a person, lol.![]()
Thanks for the info.

MICHAELSD01 Apple/Alienware Master
You're probably best off calling Alienware to ask. I'm not sure if they would still carry the screens in stock, though, since any warranty anyone could've had on it would've expired by now. Good luck!

send wife and AW to me.
i will then send you 4K in $$ so you can buy new laptop....
JK.
what michael said or you could scour the net for a used one and swap screens. (if the used one works that is...)
just a thought. -

Maybe you can try something like this,
i think it's a lot cheaper to replace it yourself
Good luck.. -

wow vito...+1 for the kewl link (bah! says i need to wait - forgot i gave ya rep recently for another kewl post)...lol
(not that i need it, but kewl none the less)
btw - how would one discover the brand/model needed for replacement anyway? -
-
omg tff.....
im gonna tell....
(just hope you dont charge for a restock fee....) -
That's right thank's again...for that rep.
have one yourself, you made me search on the net for that link -
there are basically 3 ways for you to find out
a)call customer service to see if they can look it up for you.
b)use system information tools such as
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
or
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,6241-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/description.html
if system information tools cant display what the model number is, its because the information isnt in your registry. system information tools get their info from the registry.
c)take the screen apart to find the sticker with the model number on it. -
lol vito...and thx.
thx as well exiled.
never knew stuff like that existed for further info on system info.
i mean i just dl'd cpuz the other day...lol
a. yeah could do that...lol
b. ditto
c. did not think that far - was thinking the unit newer - not used and out of warranty...mind is slipping.... -
Thx exiled
I learn every day on this forum.. -
yea basically you should follow those steps. first start with customer service, then if they cant do anything install one of the those programs. if none of those work then you should go to your last resort which is taking apart the lcd.

The link's site made it easy as pie to look for a new screen. All I had to do was use the search feature and pic my model number. I called for availability and was told a brand new LCD is only gonna run me about $400. Which isn't bad at all. For giggles I specced out a new rig and was flabbergasted. I'm definitely gonna wait til this thing blows up literally. Like I said, this rig is still pretty good compared to some of the crap pieces I see other guys bring into work, and mine is 4 years old.

What resolution screen do you want? I have the 1680 screen for that brand of Laptop (The Sager 9860). Still worked when I gutted the laptop when it died about a year and a half ago.

Here's an update.
I ordered a new 17" 1440x900 LCD with the Hi Gloss finish. MY original was just a regular LCD. Using their step by step instructions (Which I tossed into the garbage seconds later), I proceeded to pass bricks through my sphincter and disassemble my laptop at the same time, lol. Truthfully when it was all said and done I wondered what the big deal was. It was easy as cake switching out the LCD.
Well let me tell you. It's like giving the old lady a boob job! I feel like I got a new machine this screen is so nice. When it was all said and done I wound up dropping $480 all together with overnight and the extended warranty. The fact that I got my machine running again in 2 days time made the money worth it.
And LCDS 4 Less were great to work with. Thanks to Rob and the gang there. -
Congrats Fyrfytr!
Hearing these stories always makes me happy. so many people give up when the harddrive, screen, or some other easily replaceable component of a laptop goes... It's such a piece of cake! Helps that AW gives you step-by-step instructions to dismantle almost all of their lappies. -
What I find even funnier is that I at first thought about trading in my rig for a newer one. Alienware would only pony up $250 bucks. I found a site still selling my same exact model number and they are still going for $2500 easy. What the heck?
Like I said, I'm gonna beat this thing like it owes me money. If I can replace a part I will. If it dies completely or I buy a game the machine just can't handle, then I'll take the next step to a new machine. -
When you are searching for a screen take this into account. The M7700 uses the Clevo D900K / D900T motherboards so any D900 screen will work with your M7700 pretty much. Should make the search a bit easier if the LCD posted above wasn't available.
-
Like I said, a couple hundred for a repair still beats a couple thousand for a new system currently, as long as I don't lose any performance. I got some new site bookmarked for just an occasion now. -
Good to know the display replacement isn't too bad.
-
Next time I suggest you google the part you needed, you could have saved $200 on the LCD screen you bought

LCD replacement cost.
