This might be interesting to some; a special edition Alienware M17. Apparently a Taiwanese website snagged a couple of photos of this limited edition Alienware, seen here:

More info here (got the imageshack links from them):

K guys, yes this is a hoax; there is no such thing as the M17 "Code Red," Though it would be nice if they did a special edition with another color maybe.
This is actually my Whitebook with an M9700 lid painted in pearl persimmon (red tone similar to the coat Alienware dubbed "Martian Red" on their desktops back in the day). The guys at "Paintanything.com" were responsible for the paint and they did an awesome job and for a great price. I would highly recommend them if you have any paintjobs, though you'd probably need to do the disassembly yourself).
There were a few obstacles swapping the Whitebook lid out with this one. For instance, I had to swap the inverter wire of the LCD with that of the M9700 to get the Alien head to work. Also, I used paint thinner on the Alien head because it had that little dot on the head, and that's what gives it that translucent look. Now, the whole head lights up blue, though the eyes are darker (think of it as an inverted Alien head light up).
Although the Camera densities between the Whitebook and the M9700 were different(2.0MP vs 1.3MP), the connectivity was pretty much the same. In addition, the wireless antennas were a bit different, but the ones in the Whitebook were just flat metal tapes, and thus installing it on the painted lid was no biggie.
I might have pissed off some and entertained others. But here's the last pic of it opened:

Next on my list is the palmrest. I'm currently talking to paintanything.com regarding the finish (would like a non-glossy one to prevent fingerprint smudge).

nice find ichime +rep ... err Remind me to rep you.
I'm 3 deep in owed reps right now.
-
Is it fake?
I don't like the shinny red. -
The article is down.
-
interesting. i wonder if only the lid will be red, or the whole body.
-
-
looks fake, link or it never happened
-
ichime, what's this mean? Im not fluent - Die von Ihnen angeforderte Ressource "/preview/m17-red-code.html" wurde nicht gefunden.
-
every heard of photoshop moron... and why would this be on a german site?
-
Sernul... take it easy. Why does everything have to be FAKE FAKE OMG FAKE *NAME CALLING* ... relax... any new PC stuff is GOOD news.
Edit: And even if it was a photo shop, it's fun to speculate. Though that's a pretty convincing PS if so. -
gah, check out high-res versions of the pics... smudge-marks and everything. if it's a 'shop job, it's a real good one.
as for the german, "Die von Ihnen angeforderte Ressource "/preview/m17-red-code.html" wurde nicht gefunden." translated means:
"The resource "/preview/m17-red-code.html" you requested was not found."
not very helpful, if you ask me -
I don't know, maybe because that German site also linked the pictures from a Taiwanese site that can't be translated via google translator?
Anywho, seems that the link is down... -
Hmm.. Isn't there a photoshop finger smudge tool?
-
God that looks utterly vulgar imho

*looks at Topper's Avvie*
you're right.. -
wow now i really think maybe i should wait for the 4850's. but i asked someone directly from ocz and they told me for sure not till q2 of next year at the earliest?? but if alienware will get them first man it will be tough not to wait
-
z, don't waste your time..believe me
-
i def dont want the red lid imo it looks aweful but oh man id love those 4850's..
why do say not to waste the time? -
It doesn't look fake. Faking things like Shiny red paint jobs in Photoshop is defiantly nothing easy.
4870s are great news. But the colour. I'm just hating that. -
I highly doubt it is photoshoped pictures, it is very hard to change from black to a color due to the reflections, or lack of on a matte black surface. I could be some on took a lid and painted it red.
-
yeah but wow ill be pissed if i order the 3870's this week then in like 2 weeks the 4850's are out
-
What if it were... a non-photoshopped, but smart person created picture? Like, a ploy?!
-
but imo it may be worth 2 weeks to me to make sure..as i said all i know is i will be pissed 2 weeks is not to long to wait
-
You'd have to wait 6 to be sure tho
"December - Jan"
And if you waited that long, you might as well hold out for a 4870 solution... and then well...
Who knows!? -
Well, I'll be delaying my order until Jan just to be sure... Wouldn't want to order 3870s if the 4k series is behind corner.
-
-
well i was told this was a "ploy" im not saying more but from what i am told dont believe what you read
-
Anyways - would be great if they released it in red, although, dont think I'm tempted to buy one lol.
Just my thoughts,
Chris -
This could be a fake and it could not. I don't see this being a photoshop job as it looks pretty real to me. However, I do see a user painting over the matte finish with a glossy cherry red. Personally I'm hoping it is not a fake however we would probably be hearing this news from other places as this chassis is not "owned" by AW (aka exclusivity).
-
well whys it so hard to believe a red instead of matte black m17?
and as for the 4870 mobile cards I don't think those will be around until ATI releases the next generation of cards for the desktops -
-
. I'm waiting for pink next!
-
I'll be buying that for my gf me thinks
.
-
Somebody is heaving so much fun with those coloristic tricks
Edit: not to mention, top of my M17 isn`t glossy so I doubt it will reflect flash from camera like that -
Yeah, gotta love Ctrl+U in photoshop
-
guys this is not real. maybe the person responsible will come and tell you guys that..im not saying any more

haha, updated the first/original post
-
sweet mod ichime. i knew it couldn't be a 'shop job.
does the m9700 lid really fit the whitebook perfectly? -
-
hmm wonder how much just the lid is. and maybe the palmrest id love the matte lid with the matte palmrest the rest can stay glossy imo..
-
i'm sure you could find an m9700/9750 lid on ebay, and then have it painted.
-
i just want the matte finish though
-
Edit: Also, for some lids, you'll need to find the Alien head and the board separately. The first Alien head I had broke from also using excess paint thinner. I had to buy a M5500i lid and remove the head from it. They have a couple of Alien head boards from the M9700 and the M9750, but the boards from other LCDs are not compatible though.
