Hi everyone, I just received my 2nd hand M17x today and the keyboard light is not working after a fresh reformat. I googled and searched the forum but all I found was a registry fix to this problem and that did not fix it. Is there anything else I can try/test to fix this?
Secondly I want to try overclocking the P8600 processor but all I can adjust is the FSB speed in the BIOS, what kind of FSB do I need if I want to OC to 2.8ghz?
Thirdly I read about people overclocking their GPU, what kind of program does laptop use for overclocking?
Sorry for so many questions I'm very new to laptop gaming and I'm still learning. Thanks in advance!

Do none of the lights work at all or just the keyboard light? Have you gone in command center yet and check/create a profile for the keyboard thats what i had to do once.

the whole laptop's lights is not working, not just the keyboard. I just spoke with the seller again and he said when he received the laptop the lights work fine but after a bios update and a reformat it no longer works.

Also, I've own a Dell Vostro in the past and the touch buttons above the keyboard is exactly the same as the M17x. But right now the LED isn't working so that part is not lit up neither, however the touch button are functional.

For the lights, start fresh:
- Uninstall via Programs & Features Control Panel -
Alienware Command Center
Alienware Onscreen Display (or OSD)
- Download the following -
BIOS A02
Alienware OSD
Alienware CommandCenter
- Install in the following order -
BIOS A02 - then reboot
Alienware OSD - then reboot
Alienware CommandCenter - then reboot
Once back at the desktop, Create a new Theme in AlienFX (open Command Center -> enter AlienFX -> close the current theme -> create a new theme).
See if that works... if not, then contact Dell as I'm sure you have already transferred the warranty over. It could be an issue with cables - the previous owner may have gone into the system and failed to correctly attach them or damaged them. Not sure.

Hi Batboy I tried to follow your instructions but when I unzip the OSD it says I already have the files unzipped to C:\dell\drivers\R240771 and I get this error
"An error occured while unzipping. One or more files were not successfully unzipped. The error code is 40."
What should I do next? Also for the OSD application it is for version: A03, is that the bios A03? Because I succesfully installed A02 only.
UPDATE: nvm I went into the directory of the drivers and got OSD to install properly
Update 2: I installed Alienware Command Center and select "M17x" as my computer model and after going into the editor CC says "Cannot open theme".. I tried to hit file > open theme > and manually select the theme call Alienware but the same error occurs. If anyone can help me with this I will greatly appreciate it, it really sucks to not have a LED-enabled M17x! >_<
Update 3: Sorry guys to keep editing my message but I foudn out another thing that may lead to a solution to this issue. I tried to run alienwarefxtester.exe and what's weird is for the board information it says "No board detected" and beside Current Version there is nothing. I'm really confused now because I just installed WIN7, upgraded from Vista and when I had Vista at least Command Center FX showed a M17x with lights configurable, now that I have WIN7 I installed BIOS/OSD/CC and when I load the FX editor the FX section is completely blank and I cannot open themes anymore, not even themes I download from other users on this forum! What's going on.... -
Alienwarefxtester.exe?
-
Yeah, it is an executable file until c
rogram files/alienware/command center/AlienwareAlienFXTester.exe
It supposedly tests the laptop's LED to see if it works but when I launch it it cannot even detect the board information, it is just blank and says "board not detected" so I am completely out of ideas now on how to fix this and I may have to ship it to Dell for repairs, hopefully they can get it working.
